Inter-imperial invisibility and the logic of extractivism: Russian colonialism, its environmental cost, and federative futures in Ukraine and Estonia
This article examines “inter-imperial invisibility,” a condition created by interactions among imperial entities that threatens to discard, annihilate, or minimize the agency of non-imperial states, lands, and cultures. This condition reflects imperial entities’ incapacity to recognize in other lands and cultures anything other than what aligns with their narrow interests: resources to be extracted and opportunities to extend ideological, politic…
Neoliberalism or postmodernism? Decolonizing Soviet Estonia, 1987–1991
This comparative analysis of sociopolitical and cultural discourses in the Estonian SSR from 1987–1991 concentrates on the tension between postmodernism as a cultural logic of late socialism and neoliberalism as a then-emergent modern ideology. Postmodernist and neoliberal ideas both emerged from decolonial reactions to Soviet rule, albeit from different aspects of it. Postmodernism reacted to the sense that the stagnation-era Soviet regime was ‘…
Inimene kui looduslik keha. Eesti kirjanduse tajuilmad 1960.–1980. aastatel
Comparative Spatial Intimacies and the Affective Geography of Home: Imaginaries and Sense-Regimes in the Soviet-Era Baltics
This essay investigates Soviet-era homesites in the Baltic states as combinations of home imaginaries and people’s affective, sensorial relationship to the materiality of their home space. The aspect of relationality is foregrounded: the primary level of meaning-making as regards one’s quotidian home life, the article suggests, takes place at the level of comparative spatial intimacies—that is, in relation to one’s own bodily movement in space an…
Rethinking Soviet Selfhood in the Era of the Anthropocene: From the Foucauldian Paradigm to the Naturecultural Theory of the Subject
Anthropogenic climate change necessitates rethinking the role of academic scholarship. This article addresses the question of Soviet subjecthoods from the perspective of one's affective connection to natural environments, while keeping in mind the multiscalarity of subjecthood. It traces a genealogy of environmentally-attuned selfhoods in the late Soviet-era sociocultural imagination and positions this model within the context of present-day unde…

A Post-Soviet Eco-Digital Nation? Metonymic Processes of Nation-Building and Estonia’s High-Tech Dreams in the 2010s
How do Estonians imagine themselves as a nation? According to a popular Estonian essayist, a proper Estonian digs his garden on Mondays and mines his bitcoins on Tuesdays. This article focuses on Estonian imaginaries to study the grounding structures of Estonian identity-creation in the 2010s and it articulates the core of a canonized understanding of Estonian identity as “eco-digital nationhood.” The article explores Estonia’s eco-digital nation…
Maakodu eesti NSV-S. Kultuurilised kujutelmad ja argised asjad
Ometi on õigesti mõistetud kodukultuur just see alus, millel põhineb kogu rahva ja ühiskonna üldine kultuuriline tase; see kasvupinnas, millest võivad välja kasvada kogu ühiskonna üldised kultuurilised taotlused. (Mirov 1968: 1) Kodu kui ühiskonna alus ja kasvupinnas, kodu kui paik, mis on intiimne, varjatud ja avalikust elust eraldatud – kuidas mõista ja kuidas analüüsida kodu [...]
Coloniality, Nationality, Modernity: A Postcolonial View on Baltic Cultures under Soviet Rule
Afekt, koloniaalsus, rahvuslus ja Kultuuriuuringud: Teine saatesõna
Eesti kirjanduse ja laiemalt kultuuriuuringute valdkonda on raske, kui mitte võimatu, lahutada rahvusluse teemast. Suhted rahvuslusega on sealjuures mitmetahulised: kultuuriuuringud seavad endale ülesandeks kultuuri kriitilise analüüsimise, ent nad moodustavad paratamatult osa rahvuslikust kultuurisfäärist. Sestap võib kriitiline analüüs küll esitada oma tulemusi objektiivsena, ent siiski edasi kanda ajastu domineerivaid väärtushinnanguid. Järgmi…

Armastusest: Tõerežiimid, kultuurilised kujutelmad ja kehaline ilmakogemus / On Love: Regimes of Truth, Cultural Imaginaries and the Bodily Experience of Being in the World

The ghost of essentialism and the trap of binarism: Six theses on the Soviet empire
This article endeavors to open a new critical space for Soviet studies and for nationalities studies more generally. Through analyses of recent trends in Soviet studies, the article dismantles the frequently used opposition between subjective and objective approaches to Soviet empire and suggests instead that truths and categories, whether considered “subjective” or “objective,” are constructed discursively, through legitimizing certain interpret…

The Problem of Soviet Colonialism in the Baltics
This essay works through some of the necessary preliminary questions in thinking about Soviet colonialism in the Baltics. It opens by tracing the prehistory of critical thinking about Soviet colonialism in the 1960s and considers why the topic of Soviet colonialism has not (or not yet) become a dominant way to understand Soviet history. The central question posed by the article is whether one can speak about the Soviet invasions of the Baltic Sta…
Postkolonialismi pealetung post -sovetoloogias: Kas paradigmamuutuse künnisel? The Rise of Post-Colonialism in Post-Soviet Studies: Witnessing the Paradigm Change
This article analyses the current state of research in studies of Soviet colonialism and considers inner tensions within this emerging field. By now, dozens of monographs and hundreds of articles touch upon the various aspects of Soviet postcolonialism, yet the field is fragmented and full of inner contradictions and unanswered questions: What is the relationship of research in Soviet colonialism to postcolonial studies in general? What is its re…

Argiilma poeetika ja pidulik elu. The poetics of the everyday and festive life
This article investigates ways of writing about the everyday in contemporary life. It starts by posing the question of why literature thrives especially on violence and extraordinary events. If literature strives to speak to us through our experience of being in the world, and aims to help us understand our common human experience, should it not rather avoid the extraordinary? Without a doubt, a topic needs to captivate its writer no less than it…
