Multiple Dendrochronological Signals Indicate the Eruption of ParíCutin Volcano, Michoacán, Mexico
The eruption of Parícutin (1943–1952), a cinder cone volcano in Michoacán, Mexico, caused dendrochronological and dendrochemical responses that might be useful as general dating tools for eruptions. For the eruption period, pines near Parícutin have slightly suppressed ring widths plus high inter-annual variability of width. Wood anatomy changes include traumatic resin ducts and thin bands of false latewood. Dendrochemistry of tree rings shows li…
Lava, Corn, and Ritual in the Northern Southwest
Fifty-five pieces of lava with impressions of prehistoric corn have recently been recovered from NA 860, a small habitation site near Sunset Crater Volcano in northern Arizona. Archaeological, geological, and botanical information suggest that husked ears of corn were deliberately placed in the lava's path when the volcano erupted in the mid-to-late eleventh century A.D. Over 40 kg of basalt lava containing the hardened corn casts were then taken…
A Revised Chronology and Phase Sequence for the Lower Tonto Basin of Central Arizona
Recent research in the Tonto Basin of central Arizona as part of the Bureau of Reclamation's Roosevelt Lake Project has led to the formulation of a new chronology and phase sequence. This chronology is presented and phases defined. Issues discussed include the presence of an indigenous, Early Ceramic period population (ca. A.D. 100–600); immigration of Hohokam groups into the Tonto Basin during the Gila Butte phase (A.D. 750–850); a change from a…

Tucson Basin Stucco-Coated Plain Ware a Technological Assessment
Excavations at the Tanque Verde Wash Site (AZ BB: 13: 68 [ASM]), a small village in the northeastern Tucson Basin occupied during the Middle Rincon subphase (A.D. 1000–1100), produced a large collection of plain ware ceramics with a mud-coated, or stucco-coated, exterior surface. Prior to the recovery of this material, the application of a stucco coating on plain ware ceramics had been noted only on a few sherds from one other site in the Tucson …
The deer hunters
Star Carr, the Mesolithic site excavated thirty years ago, has been considered a classic example of a winter season base camp until recently reinterpreted as a specialized industrial locale. By focusing on site formation processes, we present an alternative interpretation that Star Carr was a hunting and butchering site occupied frequently for very short periods at various times of the year. Our argument considers how recent ethnoarchaeological, …
