Traktext: Investigating writing processes using eye-tracking technology
The purpose of this research was to provide a brief review of existing writing research methodologies, describe a new methodology in the investigation of writing, and demonstrate how this new methodology can be used in a pilot study to investigate the use of writing during problem solving. Our new methodology, TRAKTEXT, makes use of eye-tracking technology, which provides continuous measures of processing time, attention, and effort; does not dis…
Varying influences of the built environment on household travel in 15 diverse regions of the United States
This study pools household travel and built environment data from 15 diverse US regions to produce travel models with more external validity than any to date. It uses a large number of consistently defined built environmental variables to predict five household travel outcomes – car trips, walk trips, bike trips, transit trips and vehicle miles travelled (VMT). It employs multilevel modelling to account for the dependence of households in the sam…
Number-of-Features Effects During Reading: Evidence From Eye Movements
Researchers have demonstrated that words with high numbers of features (NOF) are recognized more quickly than words with low NOF. One difficulty in testing theories of word recognition with paradigms that present words in isolation, however, is that these paradigms can produce task demands not present in naturalistic reading situations. Extending previous research on this topic, we embedded high and low NOF words in neutral sentences that partici…

Interviewer Questions and Content Analysis of Children's Statements of Sexual Abuse
Effects of forensic interview techniques on the production of free-narrative and Criteria-Based Content Analysis (CBCA) criteria were assessed in police interviews with 48 children (ages 3 to 16) who alleged they had been sexually abused. These allegations were later categorized as confirmed (n = 35) or highly doubtful (n = 13) based on information obtained independent of the statements. Two raters independently coded all interviewer utterances a…
The effects of social context and defensiveness on the physiological responses of repressive copers
In previous research (T.L. Newton & R.J. Contrada, 1992), social context was found to moderate exaggerated physiological reactivity among individuals identified as using a repressive coping style. In this experiment, 119 undergraduates were classified into low-anxious, high-anxious, repressor, and defensive high-anxious coping categories. All participants completed a stressful speech task under either a public or private social context condition.…
