Cooperativeness and Advancement of Managers: An International Perspective
This article examines the relationship between cooperative tendencies of middle managers and their rate of advancement in organizational settings. Data was collected by means of three independent simulation exercises, which were administered in 12 national groups. Altogether, 700-2000 managers participated, depending on the specific exercise. The results indicate that, on a global basis, organizations seem to reward their managers more for noncoo…
Participation and Productivity: An Empirical Study
This paper appraises the effects on productivity of a worker participation plan in a unionized foundry. The authors analyzed detailed records of 262 meetings of workers, supervisors, and managers that were held from 1969 to 1975 to discuss means of increasing productivity. An index of participative activity, measuring factors such as the frequency of meetings, the relevance of the subjects discussed, and the number of interchanges in a meeting, w…

This article examines the record of experience with a succession of worker participation programs in Israel over the past 50 years. Collective bargaining has been the universal form of industrial democracy, but it has been accompanied and supplemented at various times by joint productivity councils, plant councils, and joint management boards. Families in which one of the parents is absent have so far been studied under different categories (prisoners, divorced) or different names (incomplete, or one-parent).
