Desires for In Situ Adaptation Versus Out‐Migration? The Impact of Flooding and Cyclones on Polder Communities in the Bangladesh Delta
In Bangladesh's delta, rural communities have long held lives inseparable from seasonal flooding, adapting their homes and livelihoods to the annual monsoon. However, land subsidence, changing seasons, severe storms, increased salinity, and rising sea levels are threatening local livelihoods. The objective of this paper is to understand rural residents' perceptions of climate impacts and adaptation measures, focusing on their mobility choices. Th…

The Firm's Role in Displaced Workers' Earnings Losses
The authors investigate the role of firm pay premiums in explaining the large, persistent earnings losses of displaced workers. They first estimate that long-run earnings for displaced workers from 2002 to 2008 in Ohio are depressed by 22%. Drawing upon empirical approaches from the displaced worker and firm heterogeneity literature, the authors then estimate that one-quarter of this earnings loss can be explained by the forfeiture of a favorable…

Friendship and the Cultivation of Religious Sensibilities
In recent years, some scholars have argued that our field's focus on society, discourse, and bodily practice has been insufficiently attentive to the power that personal relationships exert on the shaping of religious selves. Inspired by their insights, this article argues for the importance of friendship in understanding the cultivation of religious sensibilities. I also offer a further elaboration of how we came to sideline realms of personal i…

HIV multidisciplinary teams work
The multidisciplinary team model of HIV care evolved out of necessity due to the diverse characteristics and needs of people living with HIV disease. Though it is now accepted as the international standard of care, it represents a significant departure from methods of care for other infectious diseases, and debate continues regarding the effectiveness of its interventions. The debate has been largely uninformed by data; for example, little is kno…

The German Occupation of Belgium 1940-1944
Even on subjects as closely studied as the Second World War, there is a tendency for some scholarly works to escape the attention they deserve. This seems to have been the case with this book, perhaps because it relates to a country, and to a field of German occupation policy which are perceived as unfashionable in an academic climate increasingly centred on events in eastern Europe.More than 30 years ago, Professor Warmbrunn published The Dutch u…

Has the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, traditionally associated with the underdog, developed into some variety of ruling class? Or is it merely a nonhereditary elite? If so, what are the more important characteristics of this elite? How do they exercise their control over the life of the…
