Neolithic Fishing Stations at Šventoji, Southeastern Baltic
Several examples of de-Neolithisation have been identified in the Eastern Baltic region, where communities of Neolithic cultures—particularly in areas rich in aquatic resources—shifted from animal husbandry to fishing, or at least significantly supplemented their subsistence with freshwater resources. One such case is Šventoji in Lithuania, on the southeastern Baltic coast, primarily known for its numerous waterlogged sites with excellent preserv…

Manufacture of the Well-Known Central and Northeastern European Eye Fibulae
The emergence and widespread distribution of eye fibulae as adornment objects, from the northern provinces of the Roman Empire to northeastern Europe and Scandinavia, as well as their typology have been widely explored. Currently in Lithuania, a total of 209 eye fibulae dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries are known. The geographical distribution, typology and chronology of these Early Roman Period jewelry artifacts do not present any problem. How…
Fishers of The Corded Ware Culture in The Eastern Baltic
Between 2800 and 2400 cal BC pastoralists from Central Europe migrated into the eastern Baltic paving the way for the Corded Ware Culture (CWC), and a new type of economy, animal husbandry. Traditionally the CWC people were viewed as highly mobile due to the lack of substantial traces of dwellings and material culture at settlement sites; they were reliant on an economy based on animal husbandry as demonstrated by zooarchaeological and stable iso…
Ancient Logboats in Lithuania
More than 70 logboats are known in Lithuania and about half of them date before 1800 cal AD. This paper reviews these more ancient logboats, which were discovered in the beds of former or still existing lakes and rivers and present new radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates and wood taxa identifications. Special attention is paid to the logboat found at Šventoji 58, which is at present the oldest 14 C-dated (2895–2640 cal BC) logboat found East of the Baltic …
Fishing history of the East Baltic during the Holocene according to underwater multiperiod riverine site Kaltanėnai, northeastern Lithuania
Mesolithic AMS 14C Evidence on Microlithic and Pressure Blade Technology in the Lakeland of Eastern Lithuania
The paper presents directly dated evidence of microlithic and blade pressure technology from the newly discovered Žingiai Stone Age site situated in eastern Lithuania. During its extensive excavations in 2017–2018, numerous features containing typologically discerned lithic material and datable organic were uncovered. One feature, in particular, No. 11, contained preserved fragments of animal bones and wood charcoal. Its lithic inventory consiste…
