Fertility levels and trends in India since Independence
Determinants of breast-feeding and post-partum amenorrhoea in Orissa
A life table analysis is made of the duration of breast-feeding and postpartum amenorrhoea in Orissa, India, taking one variable at a time using data from a baseline survey of fertility and mortality (BSFM) conducted on the lines of the World Fertility Survey. Then a multivariate (proportional hazard) analysis showed that socioeconomic factors including residence, caste status and education influence the breast-feeding and post-partum amenorrhoea…
A modified stochastic model for closed birth interval
Based on some simple assumptions regarding [the] human reproduction process, a continuous time stochastic model for describing the variation in any closed birth interval of a woman of marital duration (t) has been developed. The model incorporates the possibility of the variation of the amenorrhea period among the women under observation. For illustration, the model is applied to an observed closed birth interval between first and second births o…
An extension of the waiting time distribution of first conceptions
A discrete time probability model has been developed to describe the waiting time until the first conception for a woman who is married before the age of 20 years. The model is illustrated by applying it to data on the time of first conception on the basis of the moment estimates of the parameters.
Estimation of births averted due to induced abortions
This paper presents a method of estimating the number of births averted due to induced abortions by utilising the data on prospective birth intervals of the women. Numerical illustrations are given.
Some problems of compulsion in family planning
The success of a compulsory sterilization programme depends on obtaining a correct history of family size from the couples concerned. Accordingly, we carried out a feasibility study at Prabhadevi Municipal Hospital, Bombay. At registration for confinement the women were required to produce some documentary proof such as a ration card, Employee's State Insurance Scheme card, or a letter from the Sarpanch of Gram Panchayat for women coming from vil…
A model for estimating adolescent sterility among married women
A model to estimate adolescent sterility among married women is presented using the principle of convex combination of two or more probability density functions
A model for estimating fecundability of the currently married woman from the data on her susceptibility status—A cohort approach
A probability model to estimate fecundability of a married woman has been proposed under some mild assumptions. It utilises the knowledge on the susceptibility status of the married women (including menstruation, menopause, pregnancy and amenorrhea) and therefore sets another approach for estimating fecundability. In addition, it is capable of predicting the parity, proportion of foetal losses, fecundability and incidence of secondary sterility. …
