Development of a Health Insurance Navigation Program for Long-Term Childhood Cancer Survivors
Adapting interventions to new contexts requires consideration of the needs, norms, and delivery structures of the new setting. We describe how we followed the ORBIT model of intervention development to create Health Insurance Navigation Tools (HINT), a health insurance patient navigation intervention for childhood cancer survivors. By engaging stakeholders and leveraging institutional resources, we identified and preemptively addressed real-world…
Multi-sector stakeholder's perceptions of determinants of successful implementation of a pediatric weight management intervention
Background: Multi-sector stakeholder engagement is essential in the successful implementation, dissemination, and sustainability of pediatric weight management interventions (PWMI), particularly in low-income settings where sustainability relies on external policies and reimbursement. The objective of this study was to engage stakeholders (1) to inform the creation of the intervention with adaptations needed for a successful PWMI in a primary car…
Characteristics and Experiences of Parents of Children with Learning and Attention Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder
Parents of children with learning and attention disorders (LAD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience chronic parenting stress due to the challenges in raising a child with special needs. We used a mixed methods design to examine characteristics and experiences of stress and coping among parents of children with LAD and ASD. We conducted 20 semi-structured focus group interviews with parents of children with LAD ( n = 11) and ASD ( n = 9)…

Family-Centered Care
Family-centered care (FCC) is a partnership approach to health care decision-making between the family and health care provider. FCC is considered the standard of pediatric health care by many clinical practices, hospitals, and health care groups. In this paper we enumerate the core principles of FCC in pediatric health care, describe recent adv…

Are Minority Children the Last to Benefit from a New Technology
BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care have been well documented, but few studies have addressed how disparities may change over time. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the change in relative rates over time of corticosteroid metered dose inhaler (MDI) use in minority and nonminority populations with asthma. DESIGN AND SETTING: We used a cross-sectional survey for 5 periods of 2 years' each (1989-1990, 1991-1992, 1993…

Pharmacy- and Diagnosis-Based Risk Adjustment for Children With Medicaid
BACKGROUND: Risk adjustment is useful for adjusting health care payments based on patients' health status. RESEARCH DESIGN: We used 1994-1995 Medicaid claims files for all children ages 0-18 years who were not covered by managed care in 3 states: Georgia, New Jersey, and Wisconsin. We examined sepa…

METHODS: The relationship of state SSI rates for 1989 and 1992 to child poverty, health, and program generosity were determined by multiple regression. RESULTS: The mean percentage of children e…
Market Child Care Versus Care by Relatives
We study the determinants of whether mothers of preschool-aged children use market child care versus care by relatives to assess the importance of economics versus preferences. The evidence suggests that employed mothers turn to relatives for child care partly out of preference, not just because relatives are inexpensive. Public policies that encourage the use of relatives for child care might therefore increase parental satisfaction and quality …
The perceived impact of child care costs on women’s labor supply and fertility
In a sample of Detroit-area mothers of preschool-aged children interviewed in 1986, one-third reported that child care problems had constrained their employment. Such reports were relatively prevalent among poor women. those without relatives nearby, and those willing to entrust the care of their children to nonfamily members. Only one-tenth of the sample reported a similar child care constraint on fertility, a phenomenon unrelated to income but …
