  • Toward a Critique of (Police) Violence

    Ashley J Bohrer•ARTICLE•Philosophy Today•2023

In Walter Benjamin’s pivotal essay “Toward the Critique of Violence,” the state emerges as an originary site of violence, and the police figure as a key institution that makes possible both law-preserving and law-founding violence. I argue that Benjamin offers a unique and clarifying understanding of violence that can help make sense of twenty-first century calls for police and prison abolition. At the same time, Benjamin critiques several leftis…

  • Disturbing the peace

    Open Access•Ashley J Bohrer•ARTICLE•Peace & Change•2023

This paper analyzes how the US state deploys the concept of “peace” against protesters in the use of legal charges related to “disturbing the peace” and other related infractions. Taking the US 2020 Racial Justice Uprisings as a case study, I argue that underneath the criminalization of protest under the auspices of “keeping the peace” is a central facet of state‐backed epistemic violence

  • Na direção de um anticapitalismo feminista e decolonial

    Open Access•Ashley J Bohrer, Leonardo S De Araújo•ARTICLE•Revista X•2022

  • The Speed of Crisis

    Ashley J Bohrer•ARTICLE•Social Philosophy Today•2022

This paper traces the history of accelerationism as a political philosophy, from its inception at Warwick University to its deployment by avowed white supremacists. Probing its philosophical commitment to a both a deterministic philosophy of history and a sacrificial logic of politics, I argue that even the initial elaborations of (non-race-based) accelerationism contained the seed of its development into violent white supremacy. The conclusion a…

  • Sorcery and Sovereignty

    Ashley J Bohrer•ARTICLE•Political Theology•2020•References: 7

While much has been written on Six Books on the Commonwealth and his Demonmania, scholarship on Jean Bodin generally treats these as two separate areas of inquiry. Moreover, discussions of Bodin’s economic writing, especially his Reply to Malestroit are nearly universally lacking in these discussions. In this paper, I analyze all three of these works together, arguing that Bodin’s political economic perspectives on money, population, and the stat…

  • Toward a Decolonial Feminist Anticapitalism

    Open Access•Ashley J Bohrer•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 16

This article traces the centrality of capitalism in the work of three decolonial feminists: María Lugones, Sylvia Wynter, and Sayek Valencia. Elaborating on the role of capitalism in each of their work separately, I argue that each of these thinkers conceptualizes capitalism in a novel and urgent way, charting new directions for both theory and social movement practice. I thus argue that the decolonial feminist tradition holds crucial philosophic…

  • Intersectionality and Marxism

    Ashley J Bohrer, Ashley Bohrer•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 21

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in conceptualising the relationship between oppression and capitalism as well as intense debate over the precise nature of this relationship. No doubt spurred on by the financial crisis, it has become increasingly clear that capitalism, both historically and in the twenty-first century, has had particularly devastating effects for women and people of colour. Intersectionality, which emerged in the …

  • Just wars of accumulation

    Open Access•Ashley J Bohrer•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2018•References: 7

This paper explores the links between international law, race and colonial capitalism through the Spanish and Portuguese Conquests of the Americas. Turning to the early modern philosophers of the School of Salamanca, Bohrer argues that economic theories of emergent capitalism are deeply intertwined with the racial theories of colonial conquest. Moreover, through a close reading of these texts, and in particular of the texts of Francisco de Vitori…

  • Fanon and Feminism

    Ashley J Bohrer, Ashley Bohrer•ARTICLE•Interventions•2015

This essay explores the affinities between the work of Frantz Fanon and autonomist Italian feminism. In particular, I argue that theorists like Silvia Federici, Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Giovanna Franca Dalla Costa and Leopoldina Fortunati mobilize Fanon's singular account of colonization in service of the project of feminist liberation. This essay explores the influence, both explicit and implicit, that Fanon's account of the psychosocial effects o…
