Generalizing the Inequality Process’ gamma model of particle wealth statistics
The Inequality Process (IP) has been tested and confirmed against data on incomes that are approximately gamma distributed. The IP’s gamma pdf (probability density function) model expresses statistics of IP particle wealth algebraically in terms of IP parameters for the subset of IP parameters that generate approximately gamma distributions of particle wealth, a serious limitation, one leaving statistics of the many empirical distributions of inc…
The Inequality Process Versus the Saved Wealth Model
The Inequality Process (IP) and the Saved Wealth Model (SW) are theories of income distribution. The IP's social science metatheory requires its stationary distribution to fit the distribution of labor income conditioned on education. The SW is a modification of the particle system model of the kinetic theory of gases (KTG), the basis of gas thermodynamics. The IP is a particle system similar to the SW and KTG. This article shows that the IP pass…
The Statistical Signature of Pervasive Competition on Wage and Salary Incomes
Population biologists and comparative animal behaviorists assume that competition between members of the same species allocates resource utility, but they cannot validate that assumption without a unidimensional measure of resource utility such as money, which they do not have since they leave humans to the social sciences. One of the social sciences, economics takes the point of view that pervasive zero-sum competition between people does not de…
How the gamma law of income distribution appears invariant under aggregation
The Gamma Law of Income Distribution appears to be a scientific law because the gamma pdf 1) fits the range of shapes seen in income distributions, 2) is parsimonious, 3) appears to be scale invariant, i.e., to show invariance under population aggregation, and 4) the gamma pdf's shape parameter provides a convenient descriptor of the range of shapes seen in income distributions, allowing the apparent invariance between education and the shape of …
Deriving the size distribution of personal wealth from “the rich get richer, the poor get poorer”
The folk saying, “the rich get richer, the poor get poorer”, implies that wealth flows from poorer to richer hands, a concentrating diffusion. Its academic statement is the Surplus Theory of Social Stratification. Angle (1986) abstracted this theory as an interacting particle system model of wealth distribution, the Inequality Process. In it, random pairs continually compete for each other's wealth. The richer party has a greater chance of winnin…
The inequality process and the distribution of income to blacks and whites
The Inequality Process with Coalitions is a stochastic process modelling competition for wealth. The equilibrium distribution of wealth to individuals in coalitions is found by computer simulation. Identifying the minority in the model with blacks, the majority with whites, six statistical features of the size distribution of personal income to blacks and whites in the U.S. are reproduced: the smaller median income of blacks than whites; the diff…

Accent intolerance and occupational achievement in the United States
The Ecology of Language Maintenance
Three factors have been identified as affecting one's ability to maintain his/her minority mother-tongue in a metropolitan area: proportion the minority mother-tongue group forms of the total metropolitan population, its degree of residential segregation, and the absolute number of people in the minority mother-tongue group. Each factor is an indicator of a model of the urban ecology of minority language maintenance. Data on people of six minorit…
Gender and prestige preference in language
Gender, College Major, and Earnings
Studies that examine the gap between women's and men's earnings and the gap in their returns to education have used a person's years of school completed as the measure of his or her education. It may be that these gaps are produced by what subject matters men and women study rather than by discrimination. This paper tests the effect of a person's major field in post-secondary education on his or her hourly wage to see if the content of what is le…
Myopia and corrective lenses
Educational indicators and occupational achievement
Work and Earnings
Conventional methods of model construction and testing are not well suited to the features of large longitudinal survey data sets. Conventional methods assume (1) equal time intervals between observations, (2) simultaneous observations, and (3) that missing observations are rare. As a result, the analysis of whole multiwave sets of longitudinal surveys becomes virtually impossible as the num ber of waves increases. This paper poses a research que…
Mainland Control of Manufacturing and Reward for Bilingualism in Puerto Rico
The literature on language group relations in the economy of Quebec Province suggests that more French Canadians are bilingual than English Canadians because many businesses use English and are owned or operated by English Canadians. Bilingual French Canadians are rewarded, on the average, by placement into better occupations. The hypothesis is made that a similar reward exists for bilingualism in English in the Spanish mother tongue labor force …
