Employment demand and generation under MGNREGA in India
Purpose Despite India achieving many milestones under MGNREGA, the external and internal shocks result in below potential outcomes in employment demand and generation. This study examines how these shocks matter and how the migration-prone regions perform. Design/methodology/approach This study, employing district-level data from 2018 to 2021, investigates how climate change and COVID-19 have affected the employment demand and supply. We applied …

Covid-19 and Street Vending in Tribal Areas
This study explores the impact of the COVID-19-induced economic crisis on tribal street vendors in Aizawl, India, using the framework of resilience theory. The paper uses a case-study approach to examine how street vendors recouped their economic losses after the relaxed lockdown phase during the region's most celebrated Christmas and New Year festivals. A total of 74 street vendors were interviewed for this study using a semi-structured question…
Factors affecting domestic tourism spending in India
This study examines the factors affecting domestic households' tourism spending in India. The results from using the unconditional quantile regression method show that regular salary earners in India spend less on tourism. The likelihood of tourism spending increases with higher education. Female-headed households spend less on tourism than male-headed households, suggesting masculinity in controlling resources. Households at the lower quantile o…
Defining and Measuring Informality in India
The present study contributes to the limited literature on the assessment of job quality (JQ) in India. In doing so, it acknowledges the close relationship between JQ, informality and worker wellbeing. We propose an alternative method of defining informality by distinguishing workers based on multiple dimensions of JQ. Our empirical exercise is guided by the capabilities framework as developed by Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum, among others. The st…
What attributes characterize the beneficiary households after three years of implementation of National Food Security Act
This study examines the factors associated with food security after three years of implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013. Fifteen hundred and fourteen households in three states of India—563 from Bihar, 557 from Uttar Pradesh, and 394 from Haryana—were surveyed. Data on beneficiary status, calorie consumption, economic status, social status, health status, and women empowerment were analyzed using binary logistic regression. Find…
Food insecurity dynamics in India
This study examines food (in)security dynamics for India since the year 2000 using National Sample Survey data on household consumer expenditure. In the absence of true panel data, a synthetic panel approach has been applied to analyse food security transitions, in order to examine the movement of households both into and out of food security. The overall findings revealed that the maximum chronically food insecure households were 50.4 percent in…
Intragenerational labor mobility in the Indian labor market
The present study contributes to the limited literature on labor mobility in India using the India Human Development Survey panel data for the years 2004–2005 and 2011–2012. We use three different tools, viz., transition matrices, multinomial logistic regression, and wage regressions for this study. The results show significant mobility across sectors in the economy. Mobility patterns among workers are found to differ significantly along the line…
