Can the study of video games shed light on philosophy as it is? This issue of Sciences du jeu dedicated to philosophers' perspectives on video games provides an opportunity to reflect on the contemporary practices of French-language philosophy: its fields of specialization, its methods, its relationship with social sciences. They draw on the heritage of American cybernetics, and its mechanical philosophy, in order to explore what is machinelike in man. Their goal is to create unprecedented forms of experience by coupling body a…
Les jeux vidéo comme instruments de techno-transe
This article aims to reopen the genealogy of video games, studying the similarities they share with what the author calls 'techno-trance devices'. These devices, which are contemporary to the first video games in the early 1960s, rely on the creative hijacking of laboratory instruments. They share numerous technical and media properties with video games. Moreover, there are some records of these techno-trance devices being used during religious p…

Game studies ou études du play
This paper aims at analyzing the differences between play-centric and game-centric approaches of the ludic situation. It draws on a comparative study of Jacques Henriot's and Jesper Juul's works, the later representing the ludological position inside game studies. This study illuminates three main areas of divergence between the approaches: the importance of rules, the extension of the ludic field, the role of environment in games activity. The d…
