Consideration of Jewish women's lives and experiences during the Holocaust became a priority only late in the 20th century. Scholars focused on women's roles as homemakers, wives, breadwinners, supporters and resistors, with little, if any, attention paid to their reproductive or sexual lives. The influence of a wide variety of factors on infants' feeding patterns has frequently been reported. Of growing interest is the role played by economic issues in determining the duration of breast feeding. The present study describes the attitudes toward, beliefs about, and practices in relation to working while breast feeding amongst 220 'Coloured' (of mixed ethnic origin) women. The Effects of Electric Shock Stress on Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep in Hooded Rats
The effects of various parameters of electric footshock on the sleep stage distribution of hooded rats were investigated in three experiments. Shock severity, rather than predictability or controllability, affected sleep stage distribution. Continued suppression of REM sleep occurred with the administration of 150, but not with the administration of 15 shocks per day. Development of a Life Event Scale for Pregnant, White, South African Women
The development of a life event scale for use with pregnant, white, South African women is described. Estimates of test-retest reliability of two data gathering techniques are given. The validity of the scale is discussed. It is suggested that the life event scale described overcomes many of the psychometric objections to life event scales that are found in the literature
