  • Creating trust in fully autonomous vehicles through spatialized predictive sonification

Open Access•Nathalie Lungershausen, Steffen Lepa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

The impact of a sonic human-machine interface fostering trust in fully autonomous vehicles is empirically tested using an immersive prototype consisting of a sonification concept and a VR autonomous car ride. • Spatialized predictive sonification of upcoming driving maneuvers can provide intuitively understandable feedback to passengers. • Spatialized predictive sonification of upcoming driving maneuvers can improve general trust in autonomous ve…

  • Bach, Beethoven and Brahms again? A computational view on the de facto canon of classical orchestral music in Germany and the USA at the beginning of the 21st century

  • Spotivey

    Open Access•Marion Radke, Steffen Lepa et al.•ARTICLE•Mobile Media & Communication•2023•References: 2

Everyday music listening has become an important research topic during the last decades. However, self-reporting through questionnaire surveys, the received approach for studying individual music consumption, presents methodological challenges. The rise of mobile music streaming and open application programming interfaces introduces new opportunities to address these productively. Spotivey is a free research software that integrates music streami…

  • Popular Music as Entertainment Communication

Open Access•Steffen Lepa, Jochen Steffens et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2020

Our contribution addresses popular music as essential part of media entertainment offerings. Prior works explained liking for specific music titles in ‘push scenarios’ (radio programs, music recommendation, curated playlists) by either drawing on personal genre preferences, or on findings about ‘cognitive side effects’ leading to a preference drift towards familiar and society-wide popular tracks. However, both approaches do not satisfactorily ex…

  • A computational model for predicting perceived musical expression in branding scenarios

Steffen Lepa, Martin Herzog et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2020

We describe the development of a computational model predicting listener-perceived expressions of music in branding contexts. Representative ground truth from multi-national online listening experiments was combined with machine learning of music branding expert knowledge, and audio signal analysis toolbox outputs. A mixture of random forest and traditional regression models is able to predict average ratings of perceived brand image on four dime…

  • How do people really listen to music today? Conventionalities and major turnovers in German audio repertoires

    Steffen Lepa, Anne-Kathrin Hoklas•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2015

Within the last 100 years, everyday music listening has undergone several changes in terms of the material audio technologies employed. From the gramophone to nowadays streaming multimedia gadgets, a lot of media devices and services have emerged and disappeared. Nevertheless, many older appliances still populate our media environments today and are also still used. This questions the idea of newer technologies simply substituting the older ones.…
