  • Apology and the Question of Reconciliation

    Jean‐marc Coicaud, Jean-Marc Coicaud•ARTICLE•Social research•2020

Apology is a small but significant part of justice offered to a victim. It is meant to generate some sort of reconciliation between the perpetrator and the victim, but also for the perpetrator with itself. However, for this to happen, the perpetrator has to be willing to take responsibility for the wrong/crime it has committed. The extent to which we live today in a culture that makes room for an ethics of apology is open to question

  • Information Gathering, Analysis, and Dissemination

  • Emotions in International Politics

Open Access•Jean‐marc Coicaud, Peter N Stearns et al.•BOOK•Emotions in International Politics•2016

In recent years, social scientists have increasingly recognized the interconnectedness of thought on emotions. Nowhere is the role of passions more evident than international politics, where pride, anger, guilt, fear, empathy, and other feelings are routinely on display. But in the absence of an overarching theory of emotions, how can we understand their role at the international level? Emotions in International Politics fills the need for theore…

  • The Globalization of Human Rights

    J M Beier, Jean‐marc Coicaud et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 1

The Globalisation of Human Rights addresses a set of questions focusing on the justice at the national, regional, and international levels. The examination of these questions is conducted through analysis of rights, both civil and political, and economic and social. Any search for justice is based upon identifying values, including relationships with others that are eventually institutionalized as rights. Such rights become the basis upon which c…

  • Legitimacy and Politics

    Open Access•Jean‐marc Coicaud, Jean-Marc Coicaud et al.•BOOK•Legitimacy and Politics•2002

The increase in cases of political corruption, the loss of politicians' credibility, the development of social and political forms of pathology (notably the rise of the extreme right along with exclusionist ideologies), and the role of the State have been at the center of political debates. In one way or another, these problems raise the question of the legitimacy of the established powers. The result is that legitimacy, a key notion of political…

  • Reflections on International Organisations and International Legitimacy

    Open Access•Jean‐marc Coicaud•ARTICLE•International Social Science…•2001

It may appear questionable at first sight to connect international legitimacy and international organisations. However a strong link exists between them. International organisations are the expression, defence, promotion, and projection of a socialised vision of international relations that is key to the claims and gradual implementation of a sense of international legitimacy. As a result, one way to reflect upon global governance - its present s…
