  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin in Brazil

    Open Access•César Braga-Pinto•CHAPTER•Latin American Literature in…•2022

In a self-reflexive moment in the French play Cora, ou l’esclavage (1862) by Jules Barbier (1825–1901), a man, Curtis, smilingly interrogates his friend Georges Bessièrres about his romantic interest in the play’s eponymous character: “You have to admit that if that beautiful young lady did not have such white skin, you would be less interested in her” (Barbier 5). Georges responds: “It is possible. As just as it might be, a cause always profits …

  • O imaginário intersexual de Coelho Neto

    Open Access•César Braga-Pinto•ARTICLE•Novos Estudos - CEBRAP•2022

  • Eccentrics, Extravagants, and Deviants in the Brazilian Belle Époque, or How João Do Rio Emulated Oscar Wilde

    César Braga-Pinto•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This article explores the reception and circulation of Oscar Wilde’s works and persona, including his sexuality and the news of his trial and imprisonment, among Brazilian writers at the turn of the century. Contrary to the readings of renowned Brazilian critics who have argued that Wilde’s impact can be reduced to a mystique, I trace the rapid translation and dissemination of Wilde’s work among Brazilian writers, especially João do Rio, Brazil’s…

  • The Honor of the Abolitionist and the Shamefulness of Slavery

  • Journalists, Capoeiras, and the Duel in Nineteenth-Century Rio de Janeiro

    César Braga-Pinto•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 13

This article explores how the introduction of the duel in Brazil around 1888 - along with its proponents' efforts to distinguish it from street fighting or capoeiragem and "men of honor" from dishonored capoeiras and the uncivilized masses - became a meaningful instrument in a process of symbolic reorganization with significant social, political, and legal implications. This process, staged on the streets and in the newspapers of Rio de Janeiro, …

Open Access•César Braga-Pinto, César Braga Pinto•ARTICLE•Revista do Instituto de Estudos…•2011

This essay outlines the intellectual biography of the young José Lins do Rego during the years 1919 1924, considering the cultural, social and political contexts of the period. Of particular interest is his encounter with Gilberto Freyre and the impact that the dialogue which he established with his new friend from Pernambuco had in his work. The essay focuses on some of their early writings and indi cates certain affinities, particularly with th…

  • Homem de Palavra, Homem de Letras

    César Braga-Pinto•ARTICLE•Luso-Brazilian Review•2005

This essay discusses some of the dilemmas and contradictions encountered by José Lins do Rego at the moment when he begins to articulate issues related to the role of literature and the responsibility of the writer in Brazil. I first discuss some of his newspaper articles, later published in his volumes of essays; I then undertake a close reading of his 1934 novel Bangüê. At the same time that Rego recognizes a distance that separates him from th…
