  • An intervention study examining the effects of condom wrapper graphics and scent on condom use in the Botswana Defence Force

Bonnie Robin Tran, Anne Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2014

Free condoms provided by the government are often not used by Botswana Defence Force (BDF) personnel due to a perceived unpleasant scent and unattractive wrapper. Formative work with the BDF found that scented condoms and military-inspired (camouflage) wrapper graphics were appealing to personnel. A non-randomized intervention study was implemented to determine whether condom wrapper graphics and scent improved condom use in the BDF. Four militar…

Six hundred and twenty-nine cases of viral hepatitis (A, B, and NonA-NonB) were reported among a total of 768,832 United States Navy and Marine Corps personnel during 1984 and 1985 via a passive surveillance system. Cumulative incidence for all three hepatitis types was higher than those reported for the general population at the same time. Hepatitis B was the most common diagnosis within all sex, rank, and race/ethnic description categories. Enl…

  • Unemployment and Protest in the United States, 1890-1940

    Harold R Kerbo, Richard A Shaffer•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1986•Cited by: 2

We begin with a critique of previous methods (event analysis) employed in testing deprivation theories of social movements and collective violence. Then we consider the value of group analysis through examination of the relationship between one form of deprivation (unemployment) and collective action by the unemployed in the United States from 1890–1940. By using group analysis we are able to discover that the relationship between unemployment an…
