The Impact of Number of Jobs and Selection Ratio on Classification Efficiency
This article is an extension of Brodgen's table of allocation averages, presented in EPM in 1959. The current table deals with up to 1,000 jobs and rejection rates ranging from 0 to 90
Basic Programs to Determine Sample Size and Exact Power in Anova Designs
Two BASIC programs are described. The first program calculates the sample size per treatment group (n) required to achieve the desired power in any fixed effect ANOVA design. The second program calculates the power to five decimal accuracy when df 1 , df 2 , alpha, and phi are provided, and can be used to determine the power that will result when an investigator uses some arbitrary sample size
Does Pet Dog Presence Reduce Human Cardiovascular Responses to Stress
This study tested directly the hypothesis that the mere presence of a person's pet dog produces health benefits by reducing cardiovascular arousal-induced stress. We administered mental arithmetic problems and TAT cards to 32 normotensive dog-owning college students. Half were tested with their dogs present. Dependent measures were heart rate and systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure, recorded continuously. ANOVAs revealed that me…
A Basic Program to Compute Fisher's Exact Test
This paper describes a BASIC computer program which performs Fisher's exact test for significance of association in 2 by 2 tables. Computations are ordered to avoid overflow, even in samples of one thousand observations or more
Computing Tables for the Tetrachoric Correlation Coefficient
In 1933, Chesire, Saffir, and Thurstone published their Computing Diagrams for the Tetrachoric Correlation Coefficient. Since then there have been few developments to aid the practitioner in a rapid and more accurate calculation of the tetrachoric correlation. The present study describes a set of tables for ease in determining tetrachoric correlations. Entries are provided for all X variable dichotomies and their individual Y variable dichotomies…
