The Contemporary Epoch of Struggle
This article contextualizes Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement that emerged in the fall of 2014. We argue that first, the Umbrella Movement was not merely about democracy but must be understood in the context of widening inequality and an ongoing housing and wage crisis; second, that it is part of a broader epoch of contention informed by, third, a distinct “rhizomatic movement logic” that is defined by a diversity of actors and struggles, use of soci…
The Local Horizon of Ancient Greek Religion
Which dimensions of the religious experience of the ancient Greeks become tangible only if we foreground its local horizons? This book explores the manifold ways in which Greek religious beliefs and practices are encoded in and communicate with various local environments. Its individual chapters explore 'the local' in its different forms and formulations. Besides the polis perspective, they include numerous other places and locations above and be…
Panhellenic Sanctuaries
This chapter targets the local horizon of sanctuaries whose scope and spheres of influence transcended the local. Variously labelled as ‘regional’ or ‘Panhellenic’ sanctuaries, Funke’s contribution challenges the implicit dichotomy between these descriptors and the local. He begins with the observation that religious conduct in the polis was always subject to diverse spatial dynamics, articulated, for instance, in the different reach of urban and…
Narrative Power in an Era of Crisis and Convergence
Recognizing the current conjuncture, this article explores the changing role of media and communications in the cohering of social struggles by antisystemic social movements. Transforming structural relations of media and their tactical uses, the authors argue, are key components to shifting the terrain upon which such movements build. In response to a deepening organic crisis, the authors argue for the importance of organizing against and beyond…
Öffentlichkeit - Monument - Text
The 14 th International Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy focused on the importance of inscriptions as a form of public communication. Topics discussed include the ways that the communicative nature of inscriptions is expressed in the texts themselves and sometimes even more saliently by the monument that bears the inscription. The Acts includes the full text of all the main lectures and summaries of the section contributions.

“The History of all Hitherto Existing Society
Across the last decade we have witnessed a growing wave of resistance across the globe. In this article we argue that it is critical to utilise class analysis to understand contemporary social movements. We maintain that class analysis begins with understanding class as a series of relations and/or processes that condition both the objective and subjective dimensions of class. Following this, we illustrate how sectors of the contemporary working …
From Global Justice to Occupy and Podemos
Surveying the varied contributions to this special issue, this article examines the relationships, points of inspirations and contradictory dynamics that characterize the current epoch of social movement politics and global protest. The authors argue that with the progression of neoliberal capitalism and the explosion of new technologies, a shared logic of social movement politics has emerged. This logic spans from the Zapatistas and the Global J…

Rewiring the Apparatus
This essay utilizes concepts from screen theory to better understand the function of socially engaged documentaries. In particular, it explores how the media practices of the Media Mobilizing Project (MMP) allow us to refocus our analysis to take account of the utilization of media by social movements in ways that stress the collective and empowering role it can have for fostering class-based identities. As such, we aim to highlight the materiali…
Urban Social Movements in the Age of Neoliberal Austerity
An introduction to federalism in Greek antiquity
Aitolia and the Aitolian League
Federalism in Greek Antiquity
The world of ancient Greece witnessed some of the most sophisticated and varied experiments with federalism in the pre-modern era. In the volatile interstate environment of Greece, federalism was a creative response to the challenge of establishing regional unity, while at the same time preserving a degree of local autonomy. To reconcile the forces of integration and independence, Greek federal states introduced, for example, the notion of propor…
Building Rhizomatic Social Movements? Movement-Building Relays during the Current Epoch of Contention
This article investigates the movement building dynamics of contemporary social movement milieus (such as particular protests, social forums or occupations). It develops the concept of the “relay” to introduce four ideal-type movement building relays understood as distinct movement milieus: clustering relay, networking relay, organizing relay, and transforming relay. Each ideal-type captures different points on a continuum of increasing movement …
Class In-Formation
This starts out by distinguishing between communication and communication mediums when examining social movement-powered formations of collective identity and collective action. We then focus on communication mediums to examine the different ways that old and new media are utilized in urban social movements under neoliberal capitalism. Based on shifts in the political economy and correspondingly in the contemporary composition of the working clas…
Greek Federal States and Their Sanctuaries
In ancient Greece, religion and politics were inextricably linked. This symbiosis manifests itself particularly clearly in Greek sanctuaries as locations of both cult practices and political activities. A colloquium held at Münster aimed at analysing the formative function of trans-regional sanctuaries in mainland Greece and on the Greek islands in the genesis and legitimisation of political order in Greek tribal alliances and federal states from…

Communication, class and concentric media practices
Understanding class as a process of self-making in relation to a particular, historical form of capitalism, in this article we argue that media and communication (from face-to-face and old mediums such as radio to internet-powered tools) must be conceptualized as an emerging structural dimension for class formation. Based on ethnographic fieldwork on the Media Mobilizing Project in Philadelphia, a community-based media and communications infrastr…
Suturing Working Class Subjectivities
Due to the increasingly atomized, isolated nature of social life, as well as the apparent splintering of the working class under neoliberal capitalism, media serve a pivotal infrastructural function for generating the necessary commonality between the fractured sectors of the contemporary working class. This article ethnographically and textually examines how the media driven practices of the Philadelphia-based Media Mobilizing Project helps coll…
The Rhizomatic Left, neoliberal capitalism and class
This article begins to theoretically explore today's left social movement formations in relation to shifts in capital and class relations. The article links the emergence of a novel matrix of social movement politics, which it calls the Rhizomatic Left, to the structural shifts from Fordism to neoliberal capitalism. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari, the image of the rhizome is insightful for outlining the nature and workings of contemporary social…
The Global Social Forum Rhizome
This work draws on Deleuze and Guattari's image of the ‘rhizome’ to develop a framework for mapping and understanding the global social forum process and its implications for the broader global left. The image of the rhizome is insightful for analytically accentuating the nature and workings, as well as the challenges and contemporary shortcomings, of the social forum process and more generally the broader global movement(s). Thriving on multipli…
The World Social Forum
This article examines the World Social Forum and the global social forum process it has spurred by encouraging the creation of autonomous social forums on various levels, from the local to the global. The article argues that social forums, these “open spaces” for groups, movements, and networks opposed to neoliberalism, start to function as “resistance relays.” On the basis of their common opposition to capitalism, social forums provide a catalyt…

Aitolia
Already in the Homeric period (Hom. Il. 2.638) Αlτωλ{α (Hecat. fr. 15; Thuc. 3.96.1; Xen. Hell. 4.6.1) was a region north of the Corinthian Gulf bounded to the west by the river Acheloos and to the east by Cape Antirrhion. In the north Aitolia bordered on the tribal territories of the Perrhaibians, the Athamanians, the Ainians and the Oitaians (Strabo 10.2.21). Of the coastal cities Homer and Hesiod mention only those connected with mythology (Ho…
Epeiros
The many different ways of recording the ethnikon testify to the variety and development of the ethnic and political structure of Epeiros. The tremendously complex organisation of the Epeirote tribes is difficult to analyse due to lack of sources (cf. Franke (1955);Hammond (1967); Larsen (1968); Cabanes (1976); Hammond (1994)). A high number of ethnics is attested; but they do not form an unambiguous pattern, due to the often multi-levelled hiera…
The Impact of Imperial Rome on Religions, Ritual and Religious Life in the Roman Empire
The fifth volume Impact of Empire (Roman Empire, 200 BC-AD 476) focuses on the impact of imperial Rome on religion, treating connections between Roman expansion and religion; the imperial impact on local cults; priests, priestesses and bishops and the divinity of Roman Emperors. Readership: All those interested in Roman history (also at the local level in communities in the Roman Empire), the history of ancient Greek and Roman religions, the repr…

Theatres of War
Topography, geography and ethnography occupy a small place in Thucydides' work. This chapter takes a quick look at Strabo and Polybius; and helps to put Thucydides' History into perspective as far as geography is concerned. Strabo's idea of a close relationship between geography and historiography goes back directly to Polybius; the geographer placed himself explicitly in the Polybian tradition. Although an examination of Thucydides' work yields …

Communications Networks, Movements and the Neoliberal City
Using the Philadelphia-based organization Media Mobilizing Project as a case study, this article argues for a more sophisticated understanding of social movement networks. We argue that the fragmentation of the neoliberal city has increased the saliency of networked-based organizing. Contrary to much of the existing scholarly literature, however, we argue that such networks combine horizontal and vertical forms of organization, as well as online …
