Race, Religion, and the Contradictions of Identity: Frederick Douglass Visits Rome in the Wake of Other Americans
This essay examines nineteenth-century literary responses to the perception of Roman Catholicism’s excess. It focuses on Frederick Douglass’s visit to Rome in 1887. Douglass, a former slave who had become a gifted writer and orator, visited Italy during a Grand Tour of the continent. In many respects, Douglass’s views of Italy, its culture and religon reflect that of other American intellectuals of his time. However, it also espresses his concern…

Fault Lines of Modernity: The Fractures and Repairs of Religion, Ethics, and Literature
This state of the art collection offers fresh perspectives on why intersections between literature, religion, and ethics can address the fault lines of modernity and are not necessarily the cause of modernity's 'faults.' From a diverse cohort of scholars from around the world, with appointments in comparative literature and other disciplines, the essays suggest that the imagined hegemony of a Judeo-Christian Western project is neither exclusively…
Aryans and the Brahminization of Theory: Identity Politics East and West, Past and Present
In this essay, Figueira discusses how the Aryan past can be studied as a myth, meaning a form of discourse that can be employed in the construction or the deconstruction of society. In particular, this examination focuses on the discourse concerning the Aryan race as a shared myth in nineteenth-century India and in Germany. Myths concerning the Aryans gave historical value to ancient Indian history, contributing to the ideological concerns of Ind…

The ?Global South: Yet Another Attempt to Engage the Other
This paper deals with the concept of the Global South as another theory of alterity in the tradition of multiculturalism. It argues that the underlying problem with alterity paradigms (among which we must place the global South) is that they require a decolonization of the Other in the United States to occur in order to succeed. Using as a point of departure a multicultural initiative instituted at a large Southern state-run institution, the essa…
Civilization and the Problem of Race: Portuguese and Italian Travel Narratives to India
A study of the initial encounter of the West with India effectively demonstrates that all heterologies, all investigations of the Other, seek to distinguish between what is deemed "civilized" as opposed to "barbarian." This chapter compares early Italian and Portuguese accounts of voyages to and from India1 to consider first of all how these narratives reflected or differed from the classical sources. Questions of race and racial construction fea…
