  • The Dardanians and the Origin of the So-Called “Macedonian Phalanx”

Pierre O Juhel, Pierre Juhel•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient History•2024

The Macedonian phalanx, invented by Philip II, is considered to have been a pikeman-phalanx. However, a detailed analysis has shown that the full pikeman-phalanx must have been a later military innovation which was introduced at the beginning of Antigonus Dōsōn’s reign. Before this, the phalanx can only have been one of spearmen, although it is probable that the rear ranks were already armed with pikes. Following a deeper investigation, and takin…

  • Four Hellenistic Funerary Stelae from Gephyra, Macedonia

    Miltiades B Hatzopoulos, Pierre Juhel•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2009•References: 1

The present article analyzes four Hellenistic funerary stelae from the modern village of Gephyra on the Axios River, the site of the ancient city Herakleia. The style of the monuments and the letter forms of the inscriptions allow us to establish their relative chronology and to date them to the end of the fourth and the beginning of the third century B.C.E.; our reconstruction of the stemma of the persons named in the inscriptions suggests that …

The Amphipolis regulation (Amphipolis Museum, L 905 and L 908) reveals numerous clauses ruling the life of the Macedonian army, in the camp and in the field, at the time of the last Antigonids. The second paragraph of first column of fragment B (L 908) is devoted particularly to the management of booty. Study of literary sources (mainly Polybius) permits greater precision of the historical context and a new epigraphical interpretation. All the bo…
