Program Review with the Curriculum Mapping Toolkit for Sociology
The American Sociological Association identified 12 major recommendations for the undergraduate major, which include 11 learning goals articulated in the sociological literacy framework. In total, these recommendations identified upward of 70 different curricular elements that optimal sociology programs should consider satisfying. This article shows how curriculum mapping combined with an organized set of resources (the Curriculum Mapping Toolkit…
The Center Does Hold
This article provides a critique and an addition to observations raised by Ballantine et al. in this issue. After reviewing the strengths of Ballantine et al.’s article about the need for a core in sociology, I argue that this debate has gone on long enough and needs to be reframed around areas of agreement. Three major curricular projects (that have already begun to move this discussion forward) are presented, including the American Sociological…

Challenging Traditional Marriage
Little is known about the lives of the never married. Demographic data show that rates of nonmarriage have increased significantly across racial and ethnic groups. Among women, African Americans have the highest rates of nonmarriage, followed by Asian Americans and European Americans. This research used in-depth interviews with native- and foreign-born Chinese American and Japanese American never married women to explore why these women are delay…
The status of geropsychology in australia
Australia has fallen behind overseas counterparts in the area of geropsychology, and clinical geropsychology in particular. Older Australians are not getting the level of psychological services needed on the basis of their status as a large and growing proportion of the population, nor in terms of the level of psychological problems they experience. Research showing the efficacy of psychological interventions in this age group is briefly reviewed…
Geropsychology
The increase in the proportion of the over-65 population in Australia has not been recognised in the field of psychological research and practise. It is suggested that further research is needed to identify risk factors for psychological problems in this age group. The little research that is available supports the use of psychological interventions in the management of common problems of everyday living amongst elderly clients. It is argued that…

Marriage Timing of Chinese American and Japanese American Women
Using U.S. census data, this study examines the differences in marriage rates and timing among White, Chinese American, and Japanese American women. An accelerated time model estimates the duration until marriage for each racial-ethic group while controlling for nativity, education, birth cohort, ancestry, and English proficiency. Results show that White women have the shortest duration until marriage, with a smaller percentage remaining never ma…
