Introduction
This introduction sets out the basic premises for the special issue on diagnosis and taxonomy in late antique healing. Drawing on recent insights from history of medicine, we consider health and healing as broader, sociocultural phenomena and argue that to understand late antique healing practices we must understand late antiquity. Throughout the issue we see that medical taxonomies and diagnostics rely not only on (ancient) biology, but also inc…
Two Liturgical Papyri from the Bodleian Library
Publication of two liturgical papyri from the collection of the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The first papyrus is a large fragment of a double leaf from a codex of the 5th or 6th century with a notably idiosyncratic early redaction of the anaphora of St. Mark. It belongs to and joins with P.Gen. IV 153 (re-edited here). The second papyrus is a small fragment of a single sheet assignable to perhaps the 5th or 6th century, which preserves an independe…
"The "Milan Euchologion
Four fragmentary Egyptian papyrus sheets containing liturgical texts housed at the Catholic University of Milan were published by Giuseppe Ghedini in 1933 and subsequently known as the Milan Euchologion. While reportedly lost, a single photograph of the papyri preserved in Harold Idris Bell's papers in the British Library allows for a reassessment of the arrangement and contents of the papyri. Based on a new analysis of the fragments, it is clear…
Healing in Christian Liturgy in Late Antique Egypt
Health and healing were of constant interest for Christian communities in late antique Egypt. Accordingly, a broad range of therapeutic rituals were on offer by the clergy, by monks, and in martyr shrines. Of all these, this paper explores prayers and gestures performed and substances consecrated in a liturgical context as well as some related practices, with a focus on the fourth and fifth centuries, from which most relevant sources hail. Beside…

Ein neues Zeugnis des frühen Christentums. Der Papyrus PL III/633 der Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana
The papyrus letters from an early Christian environment have always attracted the papyrologists’ attention. This paper presents a new, so far inedited piece from the Laurenziana Collection of Florence. Although the papyrus is badly mutilated and incomplete, besides the transcription, a partial and very hypothetical restoration of the content and the context can be attempted. According to my interpretation the writer gives an account of a speech h…
