Virtual Reality Aids Game Navigation: Evidence from the Hypertext Lostness Measure
Instead of traditional free movement, node-based movement can be used in virtual reality (VR) games. In node-based movement systems, players navigate by jumping to set locations. Node-based movement is similar to hypertext navigation. We show that the hypertext lostness measure can be used as a game analytic to evaluate navigational efficiency. In a randomized controlled trial with 25 adolescent participants, an immersive desktop game environment…
On the role of interaction mode and story structure in virtual reality serious games
A meta-analysis of the cognitive and motivational effects of serious games.
A meta-analytic review of the role of instructional support in game-based learning
Enhancing Online Community Activity: Development and validation of the CA framework
Factors contributing to development of active communities are identified and combined into the Community Activity framework, which is useful in setting up new, or revitalizing inactive, communities. Found factors include: notifying members of new messages by e-mail, having a news section, and ability to add pictures to member profiles. During application of the framework to an inactive community, changes have been made to privacy options, polls, …
Modeling Semantic and Structural Knowledge in Web Navigation
Research on cognitive modeling of information search and Web navigation emphasizes the importance of “information scent” (the relevance of semantic cues such as link labels and headings to a reader's goal; Pirolli & Card, 1999 Pirolli, P. and Card, S. K. 1999. Information foraging.. Psychological Review, 106: 643–675. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]). This article shows that not only semantic but also structural knowledge is inv…
Locating Information in an Online Newspaper
In this study several aspects of the usability of an online newspaper are examined. More specifically, the effects of reading-manipulation techniques such as scrolling and using hyperlinks on finding information at different locations are studied. Subjects participated in two sessions with a one-week interval. In each session subjects received a number of searching tasks consisting of finding information at different locations in the newspaper. S…
Do readers construct spatial representations in naturalistic story comprehension
This study investigated whether spatial situation models are constructed in naturalistic story comprehension. The experiment featured a relatively complex, naturalistic text. When college students were given a normal reading instruction, they processed spatial information relatively fast and were relatively poor in verifying spatial inferences, compared to subjects given a spatial reading instruction. Additional analyses showed that the possessio…
