A corpus-based investigation into key words and key patterns in post-war fiction
This study is an exploratory investigation into lexico-grammatical items specific to a large corpus of English-language post-war novels, as compared to corpora of conversation, news and academic English. Its overall aim is threefold: first, to show how the subjective impression of ‘literariness’ arising from fictional works is at least partly based on the statistically significant use of highly specific words and lexico-grammatical configurations…

Academic Writing and Culture
This article provides a critical overview of recent research on cross-cultural divergences between English, French and German academic writing, demonstrating its relevance to translation. The author starts by discussing Galtung's notion of culture-specific intellectual styles. He then explores the relationship between composition teaching and writing style. This is followed by a detailed discussion of cross-language comparisons of various text ty…
Collocation, Colligation and Encoding Dictionaries. Part I
This article attempts to synthesise recent advances in collocational theory into a coherent framework for lexicological theory and lexicographic practice. By posing a number of fundamental questions related to the definition of collocation, it critically reviews frequency-based, semantic and pragmatic approaches to collocation. It is found, among other things, that two types of collocation, namely ‘long-distance’ collocation and collocation betwe…
Collocation, Colligation and Encoding Dictionaries. Part II
The present article starts from a broad definition of collocations as holistic lexico-grammatical or semantic units (see Part I for full details), asking how such units can be adequately represented in bilingual and monolingual encoding dictionaries. It is found that an onomasiological approach to dictionary making is better suited to this task than a semasiological, framework-based methodology whereby individual lexicographers work on small, alp…
