Data Bases and Statistical Systems: Economics (General)
Some Perspectives on the Study on Time Use
The Decline in Household Saving and the Wealth Effect
Using a unique set of household level panel data, we estimate the effect of capital gains on saving by asset type, controlling for observable and unobservable household specific fixed effects. The results suggest that the decline in the personal saving rate since 1984 is largely due to the significant capital gains in corporate equities experienced over this period. Over five-year periods, the effect of capital gains in corporate equities on savi…
An Assessment of Alternative Measures of Time Use
Although time use has received much attention by social scientists as an index of resource allocation and social relations across groups, only a few studies have carefully assessed the relative strengths and weaknesses of the existing methods of measuring time use: time diary (TD), stylized (S) respondent report, and experiential sampling method (ESM). We note the varying degree of biases that arise in part from the extent of detail in the inform…
Well–Being: Concepts and Measures
Well–being, or quality of life, is a continuing goal for individuals and a major criterion for the evaluation of governments and societies. As a research concept, however, it has been marked by persisting problems of definition and measurement and by uncertainties about its changing pattern over the life course. In this article, these issues are discussed; the concept of well–being is “unpacked” and a model of stocks and flows is described as app…
Preference Parameters and Behavioral Heterogeneity: An Experimental Approach in the Health and Retirement Study
This paper reports measures of preference parameters relating to risk tolerance, time preference, and intertemporal substitution. These measures are based on survey responses to hypothetical situations constructed using an economic theorist's concept of the underlying parameters. The individual measures of preference parameters display heterogeneity. Estimated risk tolerance and the elasticity of intertemporal substitution are essentially uncorre…
On the Measurement of Expectations, Uncertainty, and Preferences
' T ' H E article in this issue by Holden, McBride, and J . Perozek (1997) on expectations of nursing home use reflects an increasingly important phenomenon in the economics literature: the use of direct measures of expectations, uncertainty, and preferences to model economic behavior. Examination of the mainstream economics literature over the past several decades shows two important but essentially inconsistent lines of thought, and one relativ…
