Beyond the pitch: Migration, communication, culture, and chastity in Nigerian women’s football
African Cultural Case: Reexamining Apologia in Communication Theory
The image repair theory, alluded to by the situational crisis communication theory, assumes two conditions that require a public oral rhetorical defense. The conditions are that (a) an act is reprehensible and (b) the person or organization is responsible for the act. However, those theories have been largely tested in the Western world, where individualism has primacy over the community. In this work, we argue that rhetorical defenses during ima…

Media Framing of Women’s Football in Nigeria from the Early Twentieth Century to Present
Nigeria has dominated competition in women’s football in the African continent during the last three decades. This includes winning all but two continental championships and representing the continent in all of the Women’s World Cups since the inception of the competition in 1991. Yet, little is known about the history of women competing in football in Nigeria and how that participation is framed by the media. In this study, newspaper archives ar…
African footballers' wives: Those paid dollars and pounds, their head is not five
Marrying a footballer may be perceived as exotic, going by the popularity of footballers, but as some studies note, coping with lives of footballers who migrate frequently is challenging. Life as the wife of an itinerant footballer involves frequent relocations. But most of these studies rarely gain insights from wives; instead, they rely on secondary sources such as their husbands for insights on the wives' and families' lives. Nevertheless, the…
Interrogating internal migration of elite Nigerian footballers

Although there is increasingly studies on internal or intra-national migration of footballers, few of them have addressed reasons why these footballers migrate. This study, u…

Nigerian football: Interests, marginalization, and struggle
Nigerian football has achieved a long line of success at both continental and global levels. A significant part of that has occurred through its local clubs and players. However, while player labour has sustained Nigerian football in many ways, the increasing capital interests of administrators have created a situation of marginalization and domination, which not only leads to player flight but also has threatened the sustainability of the league…

Urbanization and female football in Nigeria: History and struggle in a ‘man's game’
Social obstacles including colonisation, cultural inhibitions, and religious restrictions impact female participation in sports. In Nigeria, particularly, where urbanisation and women participation in football has increased, interest in studying women's football amid social obstacles continues to be important. Some of these obstacles included a British colonists’ edict prohibiting female football in the country. The edict stunted the growth of fe…
