Basaá [ɓàsː] is spoken by 282,000 people in the forest area located in the South, Centre and Littoral regions of Cameroon (based on 1982 Ethnologue record; Lewis 2009). Basaá is a narrow Bantu language in the Niger-Congo language family, and it is classified as A43 (Guthrie 1967-71, A43a in Maho 2009). The ISO code of Basaá is bas (Lewis 2009

  • The melodic tone pattern in Basaa

    Emmanuel-Moselly Makasso•ARTICLE•Africana Linguistica•2014

Basaa, a Narrow Bantu language (A43) spoken in Cameroon, displays a two‐tone lexical contrast, L and H. The aim of this paper is to describe a process found as part of verb inflection, termed Melodic Tone. This phenomenon reflects a tonal morpheme which accompanies certain TAMs in Basaa. Basaa displays only one melodic tone, the High tone (MH), which applies to almost all TAMs except the infinitive, which is in this language a noun. The melodic t…

  • Bàsàa wh-questions and prosodic structuring

    Open Access•Fatima Hamlaoui, Emmanuel-Moselly Makasso•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2011

We show that wh-words are a tool to investigate the prosodic structure of Bàsàa. Our claim is that the end of an Intonation Phrase (IP) can be identified by the presence of a long vowel on the wh-word. We propose that wh-words, which sometimes surface as C ́V and sometimes as C ́V ́V, are underlyingly of the C ́V form and they introduce a floating H. Whenever the association of this floating H with the first tone bearing unit that follows the wh-…

  • Processus de relativisation en bàsàa: De la syntaxe à la prosodie

    Open Access•Emmanuel-Moselly Makasso•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2010

Cet article propose une réflexion sur la manière dont la langue bàsàa (Bantu A 43 parlée au Cameroun) exprime la relativisation. En l’absence d’une classe grammaticale de pronoms relatifs la langue utilise la classe des démonstratifs. La stratégie démonstrative mise en place peut selon les cas, associer la classe des locatifs pour déterminer les degrés de définitude. La langue distingue également les relatives restrictives des relatives non-restr…
