Mental Health Surveillance Among Children — United States, 2013–2019
Mental health encompasses a range of mental, emotional, social, and behavioral functioning and occurs along a continuum from good to poor. Previous research has documented that mental health among children and adolescents is associated with immediate and long-term physical health and chronic disease, health risk behaviors, social relationships, education, and employment. Public health surveillance of children's mental health can be used to monito…
Circumstances Associated With Suicides Among Females—16 States, United States, 2005–2016
BACKGROUND: Suicide rates in the United States have been consistently increasing since 2005 and increasing faster among females than among males. Understanding circumstances related to the changes in suicide may help inform prevention programs. This study describes the circumstances associated with suicides among females in the United States using the National Violent Death Reporting System. METHODS: We analyzed the circumstances of suicides occu…
Vital Signs
INTRODUCTION: Suicide rates in the United States have risen nearly 30% since 1999, and mental health conditions are one of several factors contributing to suicide. Examining state-level trends in suicide and the multiple circumstances contributing to it can inform comprehensive state suicide prevention planning. METHODS: Trends in age-adjusted suicide rates among persons aged ≥10 years, by state and sex, across six consecutive 3-year periods (199…
Violence-Related Disparities Experienced by Black Youth and Young Adults
INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to characterize violence-related disparities experienced by young blacks in the U.S. Reducing violence experienced by blacks, particularly youth, who are at substantially higher risk, is essential to improving the health of blacks in the U.S. METHODS: Data from four independent data sets for youth and adults were analyzed to examine rates of homicide, assault, injury from a physical fight, bullying victi…
Sexual Orientation and Suicide Ideation, Plans, Attempts, and Medically Serious Attempts
Objectives. We examined the associations between 2 measures of sexual orientation and 4 suicide risk outcomes (SROs) from pooled local Youth Risk Behavior Surveys. Methods. We aggregated data from 5 local Youth Risk Behavior Surveys from 2001 to 2009. We defined sexual minority youths (SMYs) by sexual identity (lesbian, gay, bisexual) and sex of sexual contacts (same- or both-sex contacts). Survey logistic regression analyses controlled for a wid…
Improving Identification of Child Maltreatment Fatalities Through Public Health Surveillance
Estimated fatalities due to child maltreatment may underestimate the true extent of fatal child maltreatment. Public health surveillance of child maltreatment fatalities can help identify previously undetected cases and inform research, policy, and prevention efforts. A pilot effort in three states offers potentially useful insights for state-level child welfare leaders considering a similar collaboration. Key findings include the added value of …
Self-Harm and Suicide Attempts among High-Risk, Urban Youth in the U.S
The extent to which self-harm and suicidal behavior overlap in community samples of vulnerable youth is not well known. Secondary analyses were conducted of the "linkages study" (N = 4,131), a cross-sectional survey of students enrolled in grades 7, 9, 11/12 in a high-risk community in the U.S. in 2004. Analyses were conducted to determine the risk and protective factors (i.e., academic grades, binge drinking, illicit drug use, weapon carrying, c…

This article reviews the risk and protective factors associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors in the African American community. The authors provide a brief review of the history of suicide research in African American communities and critique some of the paradigms and underlying assumptions that have made it difficult to address the problem of suicidal behaviors in the African American community. The article also summarizes the articles t…
