Syntax of Concealed Sluicing in Bùlì
Sluicing is a star example of ellipsis first observed by Ross (1969). Ross (1969) argued that sluicing results from an embedded wh-question clause, in which wh-movement is followed by deletion of everything but a wh-phrase. Interestingly, some languages disallow embedded wh-questions and instead, express them with relative clauses. In this paper, we show that B` ul` ı, a Mabia/Gur language spoken in Northern Ghana, exhibits rarely-discussed inter…
A path of grammatical change from weak NPIs to strong NPIs in Shuri Okinawan and Bul`ı
No languages remain unchanged. Syntax, semantics, and phonology are all subject to change, and NPIs are no exception. We report our new discovery of an ongoing grammatical change between two types of NPIs, from weak NPIs (Grammar A) to strong NPIs (Grammar B), in two unrelated endangered languages, Okinawan (spoken on the main island of Shuri Okinawa, Japan) and Buli (a Mabia/Gur language spoken in Northern Ghana). We put forth a tentative hypoth…
Passive without morphology
This paper examines the syntax of a novel construction I call Passive without Morphology (PwM) constructions in Bùlì and the question of whether they have projected external arguments. The main proposal that I argue for is that PwM constructions in all their occurrences possess projected implicit external arguments. The discussions presented in the paper provide empirical as well as theoretical support for the classification of passives (Keenan a…
Tone and clause structure in Bùlì
In this article, I analyze tonal patterns of Bùlì (Mabia/Gur) verbs in sentences. I argue that Bùlì requires a more articulated structure for TP, namely, a projection of both INFL1 and INFL2. INFL1 corresponds to the standard TP and is the locus of the EPP. INFL2, on the other hand, is the locus of a generalized finite/non-finite marking on the clause. I show that this more articulated structure for TP is key in understanding the intricate tonal …
