Dubai Camel Market Transnational Workers: An Ethnographic Portrait
The paper presents an ethnographic documentation of life conditions and work patterns of transnational camel workers in the UAE. The ethnographic evidence presented is based on field work carried out in 2005 in Dubai Nad Al-Sheba camel market and in the adjacent camel racetrack and camel farms. Shaikhly Authority in the Pre-oil Gulf: An Historical-Anthropological Study
This article provides a comprehensive synthesis of existing studies of rulership and political allegiance in the Arabian Gulf before oil. It examines the main factors affecting the shaikhs' authority and the interconnectedness and interplay between them. It shows how these factors affected the rulers' authority in a dialectical fashion: sometimes empowering it, sometimes constraining it, sometimes both simultaneously
Poetics and Politics of Newly Invented Traditions in the Gulf: Camel Racing in the United Arab Emirates
This article provides ethnographic documentation and analysis of the poetry and politics of heritage revival displayed in the invented tradition of camel racing in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates, viewed here as a representative case study of the wider Gulf. Migrants' strategies of coping and patterns of accommodation in the oil‐rich Gulf societies: Evidence from the UAE
This paper presents an overview of ethnographic documentation of the foreign migrants’ strategies and patterns of accommodation in the oil‐rich Arab Gulf socieites. Documentary evidence is drawn from the UAE in the form of short case studies of families and individuals of both Arab and Asian migrant groups as well as field observations.
