Everyday discrimination and trajectories of transdiagnostic symptoms of depression and anxiety among young adults during the Covid-19 pandemic
Everyday discrimination is a stressor associated with adverse mental health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted marginalized communities and exacerbated vulnerability to worse mental health outcomes among these groups. However, the effects of discrimination on psychopathology during the pandemic have yet to be comprehensively explored. The present study examined the impact of everyday discrimination on shared and specific …
Longitudinal associations among adult attachment orientations, emotion regulation tendencies, and transdiagnostic anxiety and depression symptoms in young adults
Adult attachment orientations can influence emotion regulation. Such influence on the tendency to employ two strategies, cognitive reappraisal (which aims to modify emotional experiences) and expressive suppression (which inhibits emotional expression) and later symptoms is understudied. This longitudinal study evaluated indirect associations between adult attachment orientations-with a focus on the dimension of security-and transdiagnostic anxie…

The Effects of Family Structure on African American Adolescents' Marijuana Use
The relationship between family structure and marijuana use throughout adolescence was assessed among 1,069 African Americans from the NLSY. A model was also tested suggesting that the effects of family structure on marijuana use would be mediated by poverty, neighborhood quality, and adolescents' self-control. As most prior studies have found, family structure was not related to female adolescents' marijuana use. For young men, being raised with…
Coefficients Alpha, Beta, Omega, and the glb
There are three fundamental problems in Sijtsma (Psychometrika, 2008): (1) contrary to the name, the glb is not the greatest lower bound of reliability but rather is systematically less than ω t (McDonald, Test theory: A unified treatment, Erlbaum, Hillsdale, 1999), (2) we agree with Sijtsma that when considering how well a test measures one concept, α is not appropriate, but recommend ω t rather than the glb, and (3) the end user needs procedure…
An examination of content overlap and disorder-specific predictions in the associations of neuroticism with anxiety and depression
The Role of Personality in Psychotherapy for Anxiety and Depression
A trait approach to personality has many implications for psychotherapy. Given that traits contribute to the expression of symptoms of common psychiatric disorders, are moderately heritable, and relatively stable (yet also dynamic to some extent), long‐term change in symptoms is possible but is likely to be limited. Analogous to the manner in which genes set the reaction range for phenotype, standing on certain traits may set the patient's “thera…
Is emotion regulation a useful construct that adds to the explanatory power of learning models of anxiety disorders or a new label for old constructs
Estimating Generalizability to a Latent Variable Common to All of a Scale's Indicators
The extent to which a scale score generalizes to a latent variable common to all of the scale's indicators is indexed by the scale's general factor saturation. Seven techniques for estimating this parameter—omega hierarchical (ω h )—are compared in a series of simulated data sets. Primary comparisons were based on 160 artificial data sets simulating perfectly simple and symmetric structures that contained four group factors, and an additional 200…
A contemporary learning theory perspective on the etiology of anxiety disorders
The authors describe how contemporary learning theory and research provide the basis for perspectives on the etiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders that capture the complexity associated with individual differences in the development and course of these disorders. These insights from modern research on learning overcome the shortcomings of earlier overly simplistic behavioral approaches, which sometimes have been justifiably criticized. Th…
Cronbach’s α , Revelle’s β , and Mcdonald’s ω H
We make theoretical comparisons among five coefficients—Cronbach’s α, Revelle’s β, McDonald’s ω h , and two alternative conceptualizations of reliability. Though many end users and psychometricians alike may not distinguish among these five coefficients, we demonstrate formally their nonequivalence. Specifically, whereas there are conditions under which α, β, and ω h are equivalent to each other and to one of the two conceptualizations of reliabi…
Individual differences in the acquisition of affectively valenced associations
Two studies were conducted to test the predictions derived from the behavioral activation system and behavioral inhibition system theory of personality that trait anxiety is positively related to the speed of acquisition of punishment expectancies and impulsivity is positively related to the speed of acquisition of reward expectancies. Both studies used a standard approach-avoidance discrimination task with self-report measures of expectancies. B…
Uncontrollability and unpredictability in post-traumatic stress disorder
The disturbances observed in animals subjected to unpredictable and uncontrollable aversive events resemble post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and thus may constitute an animal model of this disorder. It is argued that the similarity between animals' symptoms and those of trauma victims may reflect common etiological factors. Relevant experiments in which animals exhibit generalized fear and arousal, discrete fear of a conditioned sti…
Personality and conditioning
Fbur experiments were conducted to test hypotheses derived from 4 alternative models of individual differences in instrumental conditioning.A standard go-no-go discrimination learning task was used in each of the 4 experiments. The results indicate that individual differences in performance of this discrimination are more consistently and strongly associated with impulsivity and anxiety than with extraversion and neuroticism. In each of the experim…
