A longitudinal study examined perceptions of received and provided social support and disregard among members of 248 infertile and fertile married couples. Open Access•Antonia Abbey, Frank M Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1991•Cited by: 17•References: 5

Infertility is a major life stressor that affects approximately 10% of U.S. married couples. Infertile women and men have reported experiencing depression, helplessness, and marital strain. Given U.S. society's emphasis on women's role as mothers, it has been suggested that women's lives are more disrupted by infertility than those of men. This hypothesis was supported in a survey of 185 infertile couples and 90 presumed fertile couples. Infertil…

  • Stress from Infertility, Marriage Factors, and Subjective Well-being of Wives and Husbands

Frank M Andrews, Antonia Abbey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1991•Cited by: 9

Stress associated with the inability to have a child is linked to four aspects of marriage and to five dimensions of life quality. Data come from 157 couples who met a standard medical definition for infertility. Wives and husbands were interviewed independently, and most of the following findings apply to both. A causal model suggests that fertility problem stress has direct effects that increase marital conflict and decrease sexual self-esteem,…
