  • What really matters

Open Access•Kholoud Khalil Aldous, J An et al.•ARTICLE•Behaviour and Information…•2023

This research characterises user engagement of approximately 3,000,000 news postings of 53 news outlets and 50,000,000 associated user comments during 8 months on 5 social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit). We investigate the effect of sentiments and topics on user engagement across four levels of user engagement expressions (i.e. views, likes, comments, cross-platform posting). We find that sentiments and t…

  • Storm the Capitol

Open Access•Claire Seungeun Lee, Juan Merizalde et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 25

The transfer of power stemming from the 2020 presidential election occurred during an unprecedented period in United States history. Uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing societal tensions, and a fragile economy increased societal polarization, exacerbated by the outgoing president's offline rhetoric. As a result, online groups such as QAnon engaged in extra political participation beyond the traditional platforms. This research explore…

  • Knowledge and Anxiety about Covid-19 in the State of Qatar, and the Middle East and North Africa Region—A Cross Sectional Study

Open Access•Sathyanarayanan Doraiswamy, Sohaila Cheema et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

While the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wreaked havoc across the globe, we have witnessed substantial mis- and disinformation regarding various aspects of the disease. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire for the general public (recruited via social media) and healthcare workers (recruited via email) from the State of Qatar, and the Middle East and North Africa region to understand the knowle…

  • Estimating Homophily in Social Networks Using Dyadic Predictions

    Open Access•George Berry, A D Sirianni et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Science•2021•References: 14

Predictions of node categories are commonly used to estimate homophily and other relational properties in networks. However, little is known about the validity of using predictions for this task. We show that estimating homophily in a network is a problem of predicting categories of dyads (edges) in the graph. Homophily estimates are unbiased when predictions of dyad categories are unbiased. Node-level prediction models, such as the use of names …

  • Populist Supporters on Reddit

Open Access•Andreas Jungherr, Oliver Posegga et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The international rise of populism has been attributed, in part, to digital media. These media allow the backers of populists to share and distribute information independent of traditional media organizations or elites and offer communication spaces in which they can support each other and strengthen communal ties irrespective of their societal standing. Can we identify these functions in distinct usage patterns of digital media by supporters of …

  • Discursive Power in Contemporary Media Systems

Open Access•Andreas Jungherr, Oliver Posegga et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 28•References: 22

Contemporary media systems are in transition. The constellation of organizations, groups, and individuals contributing information to national and international news flows has changed as a result of the digital transformation. The “hybrid media system” has proven to be one of the most instructive concepts addressing this change. Its focus on the mutually dependent interconnections between various types of media organizations, actors, and publics …

  • The Archaeometry and Archaeology of Ancient Chinese Glass

    Open Access•J Henderson, J An et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2018

This paper provides a new review of archaeometric research carried out on glass found in China, set in an archaeological context, from its earliest occurrence to the Song dynasty. It is set within a broad geographical context taking the terrestrial and maritime Silk Road contacts into account. We discuss chemical and isotopic compositional contrasts in glasses from different periods found in different parts of China, the glasses that were almost …

  • From 2,772 segments to five personas

Open Access•Joni Salminen, Sercan Şengün et al.•ARTICLE•First Monday•2018

Understanding users in the era of social media is challenging, requiring organizations to adopt novel computation-aided approaches. To exemplify such an approach, we retrieved information on millions of interactions with YouTube video content from a major Middle Eastern media outlet, to automatically generate personas that capture how different audience segments interact with thousands of individual content pieces. Then, we used qualitative data …
