Undisciplined Knowledge: Intersectional Black European Studies
This article explores the structural dependence of humanities disciplines on a Eurocentric model of knowledge production that inevitably marginalizes racialized communities, scholars of color, and their intellectual productions. Using the increasing attacks on the interdisciplines in the United States as its starting point, the article shows that a defense of the humanities as “above politics” contributes to this delegitimization of marginalized …
Beyond Trigger Warnings
This roundtable asks what queer studies might offer to an analysis of debates on campus safety. New approaches in queer studies take as their object of study not only sex and gender but also the cultural politics of liberalism; in turn, scholarship on the geopolitics of injury demonstrates the situatedness of both identity and economic forms. Brought together, these scholarly approaches provide an important lens on many of the contradictions of c…
The Universal Museum
This article addresses the long-term impact of colonialism on Europe’s internal structures and on its self-positioning in a global context. Using the 2015 refugee crisis as a focal point and centering the German example, the author explores the complex relationship between memory discourses and visions of Germany’s and Europe’s postunification future. The author argues that the erasure of colonial violence from the continent’s collective memory h…
Re-Mapping Centre and Periphery
Historians often assume a one-directional transmission of knowledge and ideas, leading to the establishment of spatial hierarchies defined as centres and peripheries. In recent decades, transnational and global history have contributed to a more inclusive understanding of intellectual and cultural exchanges that profoundly challenged the ways in which we draw our mental maps. \n \nCovering the early modern and modern periods, Re-Mapping Centre an…
Queers of Colour and (De)Colonial Spaces in Europe 1
This chapter deals with Queer People of Colour positionalities as a valuable lens through which to rethink the racial and colonial imaginaries of subjects and space in Europe. It examines race, gender, class, colonialism and sexuality, inseparably, in a shared analytic. Racial and colonial violence is often legitimized in the name of protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and queer spaces from dangerous and degenerate hateful others. A…

Queer of colour formations and translocal spaces in Europe
Our joint intervention explores Queer People of Colour (QpoC) positionalities as a valuable lens through which to rethink the racial and colonial imaginaries of subjects and space in Europe. It brings together race, gender, class, colonialism and sexuality, inseparably, in a shared analytic. We address multiple erasures: of genders, sexualities and race from discussions of space; of QPoC in Europe from discussions of European subjects, race and spa…
Time Travelers and Queer Heterotopias: Narratives from the Muslim Underground
This article suggests the existence of a spatio-temporal regime of knowledge production in Germany that configures racialized populations as a contradiction in terms, both spatially and temporally displaced within a heteronormative discourse of nation, gender, sexuality, and religion that assigns communities of color a position both outside Europe and outside modernity. This regime is currently most evident in discourses around the nation's Musli…
Gays who cannot properly be gay’: Queer Muslims in the neoliberal European city
The article traces the framing of Muslim Europeans as the continent’s Other by focusing on the silencing of queer Muslims within public debates around ‘Islam and homosexuality’. Ignoring class as a factor in the violence produced by the gentrification of urban spaces, the pitting of the (implicitly white) gay community against the (implicitly straight) Muslim community posits the latter as a threat to the continent’s foundations that needs to be …

“The Forces of Creolization”: Colorblindness and Visible Minorities in the New Europe
The Birth of a European Public: Migration, Postnationality, and Race in the Uniting of Europe
Europe appears to be in a unique position in this post-cold war, post 9/11 world, both with regard to its internal reconstruction and to its potential role in current world politics. At a time when the "post-national," "the end of the nation-state," have become buzzwords within academic and non-academic discourses of globalization, the European Union appears as the first supranational system fit for the 21st Century. The quest for an European ide…
