Science for Africa’s future food security
Africa has become import-dependent for staple food cereals over the past five decades. It is an ongoing dispute if increasing import dependency in Africa is causing food security risks for its population fueled by recent increases of uncertainties around international trade caused by geopolitical tensions and global trade policy disruptions. We call for an all-African approach based on regionally coordinated domestic support policies to increase …
Inside the crowd
SMS-enabled surveys are gaining traction as a rapid, low-cost means of monitoring food security situations for early warning systems. However, such surveys run the risk of yielding biased results, for instance due to selection, attrition, or non-response bias. To assess the suitability of SMS-enabled surveys for food security monitoring in light of these potential biases, we conducted monthly surveys of 2000 respondents across Uganda for one year…
Using high-frequency data to measure the resilience of households to food insecurity and women’s dietary diversity in Uganda
We contribute to the understanding of household resilience to shocks by using high-frequency data collected in short spans of two to three months. We examine three issues: first, whether frequent shocks within the year affect households’ food security in short periods of two to three months. Secondly, whether Resilience Index Measurement and Analysis (RIMA II) can be used to measure the resilience capacity of households to shocks using high-frequ…
The Hidden Costs of Coffee Production in the Eastern African Value Chains
There is increasing recognition that significant hidden costs associated with agrifood systems are not reflected in market prices. Coffee is among the three most traded agricultural commodities in the world and supports the livelihoods of more than 30 million smallholder households. This study quantifies the environmental and social hidden costs of coffee value chains in three countries in Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania) to guide …
The effect of carbon farming training on food security and development resilience in Northern Ghana
Carbon farming has recently been advocated for as climate change and variability mitigation and/or adaptation strategy in global agriculture. In this study, we address an important research question of whether carbon farming training can improve household resilience capacity as well as food security by employing internationally standardized indicators. Household resilience capacity and its components are measured using the Food and Agriculture Or…
The Impacts of Economic Sanctions on Food (Prices) Security
Our paper examined the impact of economic sanctions on food prices and security. Anecdotal evidence suggests that food security is threatened in nations subject to sanctions. However, the causal link has not been proven. We employ a two‐way fixed‐effects approach and leverage the entropy balancing technique to ascertain the existence of a causal link. Our analysis relies on the Global Sanctions Database for sanctions and the FAOSTAT database for …
How robust are machine learning approaches for improving food security amid crises? - Evidence from Covid-19 in Uganda
Impacts of supermarkets on child nutrition in China
In many emerging countries, agri-food value chains are transforming rapidly. One emblematic trend is the proliferation of supermarkets and other modern retailers. Supermarkets affect the way supply chains are organized and may also influence the types of foods purchased and eaten by consumers. Research on what this means for people’s diets and nutrition is still relatively scant. Here, we analyze the effects of supermarkets on child diets and nut…
Diffusion of climate-resilient seeds and information
This paper examines the drivers of climate-resilient seeds adoption among farm households and their corresponding spatial effects on farmers' neighbours adoption decisions in the semi-arid regions of Ghana, where the impacts of climate change on agriculture are marked. A spatial model was applied to a dataset elicited from farm households in addressing the research objective. The findings indicate the presence of peer or neighbourhood effects in …
Productivity growth and the role of mechanisation in African agriculture
This paper compares agricultural productivity growth, specifically, the impact of agricultural mechanisation on total factor productivity and cereal yields, across African countries using contemporaneous and sequential Malmquist index approaches. Contemporaneous approach findings indicate that agricultural productivity grew by 1% annually over 1961–2014, while sequential technology measures show much higher growth of 1.7%. The highest growth rate…

Stimulating Innovations for Sustainable Agricultural Practices among Smallholder Farmers
As part of the dissemination of sustainable intensification (SI) of agricultural practices in northern Ghana, farmers were conditionally induced with inputs to adopt the SI practices. We study the effects of the conditional inducement on maize yield and net income of farmers under a quasi-randomised phase-out design. We examine the effects of the inducement by comparing continuous induced farmers with past induced and non-induced farmers. Our res…
Intervening in Cash Crop Value Chains for Improved Nutrition
Despite their economic importance, some export-oriented cash crops inherently have low nutritional value for smallholder farmers in developing countries, where the prevalence of malnutrition and food insecurity remains alarming. This paper investigates the nutritional effects of a multi-faceted nutrition-sensitive agricultural programme, uniquely designed to address food and nutrition insecurity among smallholder cocoa, coffee and cashew farmers …
The aid-nutrition link – Does targeted development assistance related to food systems matter
Does food security matter to subjective well‐being? Evidence from a cross‐country panel
The conventional economics literature equates welfare with consumption‐based utility, neglecting the psychological effects of uncertainty and fear of the future on well‐being. In this study, we examine how food insecurity relates to changes in subjective well‐being within a comparative analysis across different country groups between 2005 and 2018 and find that food insecurity matters to well‐being. We also examine the relationship between experi…
Do non‐maternal adult female household members influence child nutrition? Empirical evidence from Ethiopia
Child malnutrition is an enormous public health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In this paper, we study the relationship between non-maternal adult female household members (AFHMs) and under-5 child nutritional outcomes using nationally representative Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data, 2016. Because most of the primary inputs that go into the production of child health are intensive in maternal time, having additio…
Conflict exposure and food consumption pathways during and after conflict
We examine the consequences of conflict exposure on food consumption and consumption pathways three and six years after the cessation of hostilities of the Lord Resistance Army insurgency in Northern Uganda. We use the correlated random effects model and fractional multinomial response model with nationally representative panel data collected during and after the cessation of hostilities. The uniqueness of this study is in using three related con…
Business registration and firm performance
Small businesses could spur economic growth. Most African small businesses are not formally registered, and informality leads to loss of government revenue. This article assesses the effect of business registration on firm performance in Malawi’s maize sub-sector. The study uses panel data of 172 traders from Malawi, and instrumental variable estimation on a systematically drawn sample. The results indicate that when registered, traders make four…
