Building collaborative infrastructures for an interdisciplinary higher education master’s program
This paper examines the practices and importance of building a collaborative infrastructure in interdisciplinary education, using the context of the master’s program developed by the Interdisciplinary Consortium for Applied Research in Ecology and Evolution (ICARE) as a case study. The study focuses on two levels of collaborative infrastructure: The project organization and project practice of the ICARE program and the specific use of CoNavigator…
The practical ethics of repurposing health data
Throughout the Global North, policymakers invest in large-scale integration of health-data infrastructures to facilitate the reuse of clinical data for administration, research, and innovation. Debates about the ethical implications of data repurposing have focused extensively on issues of patient autonomy and privacy. We suggest that it is time to scrutinize also how the everyday work of healthcare staff is affected by political ambitions of dat…

Precision patients
This paper addresses selection practices in a Danish phase 1 unit specialised in precision medicine in the field of oncology. Where precision medicine holds the ambition of selecting genetically fit medicine for the patient, we find that precision medicine in the early trial setting is oriented towards selecting clinically and genetically fit patients for available treatment protocols. Investigating how phase 1 oncologists experience and respond …
Systematically developing a family-based health promotion intervention for women with prior gestational diabetes based on evidence, theory and co-production

Aging biomarkers and the measurement of health and risk
Affect and Effect in Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration
Research across disciplines is often described as beset with problems of epistemological hierarchies and incommensurable categories. We recognize these problems working in two large interdisciplinary research projects on obesity and cholesterol lowering medicine in Denmark. We explore the affective tensions that arise in concrete situations when we meet other researchers around a shared research object. We propose that sensitivity towards such di…
Balancing methodological purity and social relevance
Intersectoral coordination of prevention over the life course

Birgitte Bruun & Line Hillersdal: Disconcerting Moments and Vague Connections: Ethical Work in Interdisciplinary Research Practice Since the 1990s, interdisciplinary research collaboration has been widely associated with innovation and the solving of pressing societal problems. With a starting point in the normative expectation that interdisciplinary research will provide better solutions, we explore how interdisciplinary collaboration unfolds in…
Changing tastes
Gastric bypass surgery is a specific medical technology that alters the body in ways that force patients to fundamentally change their eating habits. When patients enrol for surgery, they enter a learning process, encountering new and at times contested ways of sensing their bodies, tasting, and experiencing hunger and fullness. In this paper, we explore how patients begin to eat again after gastric bypass surgery. The empirical data used here ar…
Working with a fractional object
This paper explores the productive tensions occurring in an interdisciplinary research project on weight loss after obesity surgery. The study was a bio-medical/anthropological collaboration investigating to what extent eating patterns, the subjective experience of hunger and physiological mechanisms are involved in appetite regulation that might determine good or poor response to the surgery. Linking biomedical and anthropological categories and…
Doing Wholeness, Producing Subjects
This article is concerned with the ways in which bodies and subjects are enacted and negotiated in the encounter between client and practitioner within specialized kinesiology - a specific complementary and alternative medical practice. In the article we trace the ideas of connections and disconnections, which are conceptualized and practised within kinesiology. We attempt to come to grips with these specific notions of relatedness through the in…
