O trabalho analisa as representações sociais dos jovens acerca de seus problemas, e das formas de enfrentá-los, com base em 39 entrevistas realizadas junto a moradores de Duque de Caxias, de ambos os sexos, com idade variando entre 13 e 22 anos. A análise mostra que a representação de problemas se esclarece por oposição aos projetos de vida dos jovens, estruturados em torno da estabilidade econômica e afetiva.
