    Ancient Šuruppak, today Fara, was one of the major Sumerian cities in Mesopotamia. It was situated along one of the ancient watercourses of the Euphrates River. Findings date it back to the Jemdet Nasr period around 3000 bc with a continuous occupation until the end of the Ur III period around 2000 bc .     Two substantial houses dating to the early second millennium BCE have recently been unearthed at separate, previously unexplored locations in Ur. Their respective owners occupied important positions of power in different spheres. One flourished ca 1840 BCE and was the chief administrator of the second most important temple in Ur.     Nach mehr als zehn Jahren archäologischer Untersuchungen im spätbronzezeitlichen Tall Bazi im Mittleren Euphrattal wurden im Frühjahr 2004 die zwei ersten Keilschriftdokumente gefunden.
