  • Poverty, Family, and Kinship in a Heartland Community

David L Harvey•BOOK•Poverty, Family, and Kinship in a…•2017

With a few notable exceptions, sociological studies of poor, native-born, non-ethnic whites in rural areas are rare. This book corrects this oversight with an ethnographic study of a small, poor, white, heartland community that the author calls "Potter Addition." The community consists of some 100 families and is located on the rural-urban fringe of a medium-sized Midwestern city.Poverty, Family, and Kinship in a Heartland Community is the story …

  • Poverty and Disrepute

    Open Access•David L Harvey, David Harvey•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007•References: 5

On the face of it, the association of poverty and disrepute seems obvious. Poverty's material misery is to be avoided, just as is the diffuse sense of shame that attaches to those who “never had what it took,” or “should have made it, but didn't.” Indeed, the commandment to succeed is central to Merton's (1968: 185–214) theory of deviance. His “Anomie and Social Structure” posits an endorsement of success among all classes and an equal aversion t…

  • The Practical Contradictions of Marxism

    Open Access•David L Harvey, David Harvey•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 2

For more than a century proletarian socialism privileged the work-ing class and its welfare, while simultaneously reaching out to the exploited and oppressed of all races and creeds. ’ This is no longer the case. The privileging of working class interests is now challenged from within the ranks of proletarian socialism itself. For a generation many of the left’s most gifted spokespeople have urged the abandonment of its traditional commitments in…

  • The Culture of Poverty: An Ideological Analysis

    Open Access•David L Harvey, David Harvey et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•1996•Cited by: 15•References: 8

For three decades Oscar Lewis's subculture of poverty concept has been misinterpreted as a theory bent on blaming the victims of poverty for their poverty. This essay corrects this misunderstanding. Using a sociology of knowledge approach, it explores the historical origins of this misreading and shows how current poverty scholarship replicates this erroneous interpretation of Lewis's work. An attempt is made to remedy this situation by arguing t…

  • Latent Content and Ideology in a Subjective Measure of Alienation

    Open Access•Lyle G Warner, David L Harvey et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1985•References: 28

This study examines aspects of a major research tradition in sociology which developed from Seeman's classic work on the meanings of alienation. It argues that the Powerlessness Scale contains an unintended, latent ideological content (one that was excluded in Seeman's delineation of alienation's meanings through his translation of alienation theory into the language of Rotter's social learning theory). However, the Powerlessness Scale that was d…
