Epipaleolithic Remains at Tel Barukh (Naḥal Aḥiyya)
Walking through the Alleys of Motza (Moẓa)
Recent excavations at the Final Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) mega-site of Motza revealed the earliest evidence of settlement planning in the Southern Levant to date. The size of the site and the layout of its architectural units indicate that planning decisions were made throughout the settlement establishment and development, beginning with the choice of its location and extending to the organization of intra-site space. This is evident from t…
The Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Flint Assemblages from Ḥorbat Ḥani (West)
Subsistence strategy and the divergent fates of PPNB megasites
Most Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B megasites in the southern Levant were abandoned by the early seventh millennium BC, yet a few persisted. Research has focused primarily on why settlements collapsed, whereas the factors enabling persistence have received far less attention. We address this gap by analyzing a new faunal assemblage from Motza, a megasite in the Judean Hills that maintained dense occupation throughout the Final PPNB, and by comparin…

Reconstructing the last stages of bidirectional blade technology in the Levant

The Plastered Skulls and Other PPNB Finds from Yiftahel, Lower Galilee (Israel)
Two extended seasons of excavations were recently conducted at the site of Yiftahel (Khalet Khalladyiah) in the fringe of Beit Netofa valley, Lower Galilee. Four new areas (F, G, H and I) were opened in addition to the five areas excavated in the past. This note will present the highlights from the main occupational period at Yiftahel, i. e., the Mid-Late PPNB (8,000-7,000 BC). Large PPNB buildings, displaying rectilinear plan with mud-brick and/…
Excavations at Motza in the Judean Hills and the Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic B in the Southern Levant
