  • Preliminary archaeological survey and remote-sensing of shell mounds at Kwokkunum, Albatross Bay, Cape York Peninsula, Australia

Open Access•Joshua Emmitt, Kasey Allely et al.•ARTICLE•Queensland Archaeological Research•2020

Shell mounds are a prominent part of the Cape York Peninsula archaeological record. A short period of fieldwork allowed initial assessment of their presence, size, and shape in the Kwokkunum region, Albatross Bay. Shell mounds found in this area vary in size with some examples amongst the largest found in the Cape York Peninsula. Comparison of terrestrial and airborne LiDAR data suggests that shell mounds in areas like Kwokkunum may be identified…

  • Shell mounds as the basis for understanding human-environment interactions in far north Queensland, Australia

    Open Access•J S Shiner, Patricia Fanning et al.•ARTICLE•Queensland Archaeological Research•2013•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 37

The Weipa shell mounds have a long history of archaeological research that has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the emergence of late Holocene coastal economies in northern Australia. However, much of this work has focused on broad comparisons of mounds between multiple locations rather than detailed studies of multiple mounds from single locations. This level of analysis is required to understand the record of both human o…
