Association of Social Determinants of Health with Incident Mental Health Outcomes in U.S. Military Veterans
The protective role of Wisdom in Suicidal behavior
The protective role of wisdom against suicidal behavior points to possible directions for support and intervention, highlighting the necessity of psychological and philosophical approaches that increase people's wisdom as a defense against suicidal thoughts and existential distress
Psychometric validation of Indian adaptation of the San-Diego Wisdom Scale (SD-Wise-28)
Loneliness Trajectories in U.S. Military Veterans
Nearly 40% of older U.S. veterans exhibited trajectories characterized by moderate to high levels of loneliness, with both groups showing increases over time. Targeted interventions that promote social connectedness, enhance purpose in life, and address mental health concerns and early life adversities may help mitigate the negative health consequences associated with chronic loneliness in this vulnerable population

Physical and Mental Health Characteristics of 2,962 Adults With Subjective Cognitive Complaints
We investigated subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs), as well as physical and mental health factors, in adults and older adults. U.S. residents ( N = 2,962) were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform and completed a 90-item survey. Overall, 493/1930 (25.5%) of younger adults and 278/1032 (26.9%) of older adults endorsed SCCs. Analyses revealed worse physical and mental health characteristics in the SCC+ compared to the SCC- group, w…
Peripheral inflammation levels associated with degree of advanced brain aging in schizophrenia
Brain structural abnormalities have been demonstrated in schizophrenia (SZ); these resemble those seen in typical aging, but are seen at younger ages. Furthermore, SZ is associated with accelerated global brain aging, as measured by brain structure-based brain predicted age difference (Brain-PAD). High heterogeneity exists in the degree of brain abnormalities in SZ, and individual differences may be related to levels of peripheral inflammation an…
Four-Year Trajectories of Internal Strengths and Socioemotional Support Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults with HIV
Positive psychological attributes are associated with better health outcomes, yet few studies have identified their underlying constructs and none have examined their temporal trajectories in clinical vs. non-clinical samples. From data collected over 4 years from people with HIV (PWH) and HIV-uninfected (HIV-) participants, we identified two latent factors (internal strengths; socioemotional support) based on responses to seven positive psycholo…
Emotional health outcomes are influenced by sexual minority identity and HIV serostatus
For people living with HIV (PLWH) and sexual minorities (SM), the intersection of identities can compound experiences like stigma and discrimination resulting in poor emotional health. We investigated the separate and interactive associations of HIV serostatus and sexual identity with emotional health. Our dataset included 371 participants. Emotional health was assessed by the NIH Toolbox emotion battery which yields negative affect, social satis…
Plasma Levels of Neuron- and Astrocyte-Derived Exosomal Amyloid Beta1-42, Amyloid Beta1-40, and Phosphorylated Tau Levels in Schizophrenia Patients and Non-psychiatric Comparison Subjects
Introduction: Cognitive deficits in people with schizophrenia (PWS) are a major predictor of disability and functioning, yet the underlying pathophysiology remains unclear. A possible role of amyloid and tau biomarkers (hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease) is still speculative in schizophrenia. Exosomes or extracellular vesicles, involved with cell-to-cell communication and waste removal, can be used to assay brain-based proteins from peripheral blo…
Association of Loneliness and Wisdom With Gut Microbial Diversity and Composition
Loneliness and wisdom have opposite effects on health and well-being. Loneliness is a serious public health problem associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Wisdom is associated with better health and well-being. We have consistently found a strong negative correlation between loneliness and wisdom. The present study aimed to investigate the association of loneliness and wisdom with the gut microbiome. One hundred eighty-four community-…
A Cross-Sectional Study to Evaluate the Effects of Age and Duration of HIV Infection on Anxiety and Depression in Cisgender Men
This observational cross-sectional study of 152 people with HIV (PWH) examined the effects of age and estimated duration of HIV infection (EDI) on depressive and anxiety symptoms. All participants were cisgender men and completed the Profile of Moods State (POMS), a self-report inventory of current (i.e., past week) mood states. Overall, study results confirmed higher levels of anxiety and depression in PWH compared to individuals without HIV. Ag…
Older Adults and the Mental Health Effects of Covid-19
This Viewpoint summarizes evidence suggesting that, counter to expectation, older adults as a group may be more resilient to the anxiety, depression, and stress-related mental health disorders characteristic of younger populations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Battling the Modern Behavioral Epidemic of Loneliness
This Viewpoint explores loneliness as a behavioral epidemic.
Clinical Correlates of Insulin Resistance in Chronic Schizophrenia
Higher prevalence of physical comorbidity and premature mortality in persons with schizophrenia (PwS) results primarily from heightened cardiovascular and metabolic risks. The literature suggests that insulin resistance precedes the development of obesity, smoking, and use of antipsychotic medications, although these likely play a compounding role later in the course of the disorder. It is thus important to discover the clinical characteristics o…
Grit and Ambition are Associated with Better Neurocognitive and Everyday Functioning Among Adults Living with HIV
Psychosocial Correlates of Frailty Among HIV-Infected and HIV-Uninfected Adults
Frailty is a geriatric condition characterized by increased vulnerability to physical impairments and limitations that may lead to disabilities and mortality. Although studies in the general population suggest that psychosocial factors affect frailty, less is known about whether similar associations exist among people living with HIV (PLWH). The purpose of this study was to examine psychosocial correlates of frailty among PLWH and HIV-uninfected …

Association Between Older Age and More Successful Aging
OBJECTIVE: There is growing public health interest in understanding and promoting successful aging. While there has been some exciting empirical work on objective measures of physical health, relatively little published research combines physical, cognitive, and psychological assessments in large, randomly selected, community-based samples to assess self-rated successful aging. METHOD: In the Successful AGing Evaluation (SAGE) study, the authors …

A Call for Training the Trainers
There is a widening disparity between the proportion of ethnic minority Americans in the population and the number of researchers from these minority groups. One major obstacle in this arena relates to a dearth of mentors for such trainees. The present academic settings are not optimal for development and sustenance of research mentors, especially for mentees from underrepresented minority ethnic groups. Mentoring skills can and should be evaluat…

Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Medication Nonadherence in Patients With Schizophrenia
OBJECTIVE: Nonadherence to prescribed antipsychotic medications places patients with schizophrenia at a greatly increased risk of illness exacerbation and rehospitalization. Identification of risk factors for nonadherence is an initial step toward designing effective interventions. This article reviews recent literature on the prevalence of and risk factors for medication nonadherence in patients with schizophrenia. DATA SOURCES: We searched the …
