(Human) Rights Associations (1775–1898)
Noting the proliferation of human rights leagues at the turn of the twentieth century, and their significance up to the interwar period, this chapter argues that such leagues built on an organizational and discursive repertoire built over the course of the prior century by three transnational movements above all: the abolitionist, women’s suffrage, and peace movements. These movements shared a recognition of a systemic link between the rule of la…

Legacy of the Enlightenment
What kinds of historical knowledge and historical consciousness have an impact on society? How can we study this question with regard to former periods like the interwar period in the twentieth century? Civil society organizations such as human rights leagues and masonic associations had a broad membership base, organized well‐structured internal communication processes, and, above all, produced their own documents, providing broader insights int…
Human Rights Leagues in Europe (1898-2016)
When the French Ligue des droits de l’homme was founded in 1898, it was the world’s first league for human rights. Over the following decades, human rights leagues were formed in many other countries following its example, and from 1922, they advocated for a universal human rights ideal under the auspices of a shared umbrella organization. The majority of these leagues were forced to interrupt their activities at some point, especially during the…
European solidarity
‘European solidarity’ is one of the most frequently used words in contemporary public discourse, but what does it mean? This article investigates the historical and semantic background of the term in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish since the French Revolution, when ‘solidarity’ became a political keyword for the first time in European history. With the founding of the Holy Alliance in 1815 the idea of ‘European solidarity’ as an inst…
Gender and Eurocentrism
What is European in the history of Europe? In order to answer this question, Wolfgang Schmale uses two approaches. Firstly, he develops the concept of a performative speech act into what he defines as a collective historical speech act . Secondly, he looks at European history from a gender point of view. Europe was generally thought to be male – considering the former Republic of Letters' definition of Europe as a male civilization. However, the …
