Engaging young learners: Technology and music in Beijing nurseries
This paper draws on research conducted for a doctoral thesis to explore the impact of integrating Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) and music on student engagement in private nurseries in Beijing. Through a combination of Collaborative Action Research (CAR) and qualitative case studies, the research investigates how TEL and music influence teaching practices and student engagement. Improving classroom inclusion through Orff-inspired music education: A study from a secondary school in Fujian, China
This study explores how Orff-inspired music education may promote inclusion when Chinese urban students and their migrant classmates with diverse backgrounds attend music education lessons together. ‘Wayfarers: Confronting the past through traditional music in schools’
This paper discusses an inquiry-based school-university partnership project conducted by history and music education specialists in Scotland. The project was music-led with history underpinning it, namely the musical migration of Scots and Irish to the Eastern United States. From the 18th century onwards thousands of Scots and Irish moved to Appalachia – ‘the wayfarers’ in our title. Their heritage now features in the Scottish school curriculum. …
Melodies of hope for street children in Cochabamba: A case study of a community music programme and its challenges
This study, the first of its kind in Bolivia, examines the role of community music programmes in fostering social cohesion in the country, focusing on the case of EnseñARTE, a non-profit organization supporting vulnerable youth in Cochabamba. Through a qualitative case study approach, we analyse the perceived utility and challenges of their music programme, based on interviews with project developers and beneficiaries. This article presents an investigation on music education in Northern Ireland (NI) aimed at uncovering how 22 music teachers in post-primary schools addressed the 2007 statutory music curriculum in terms of its potential to promote social cohesion in NI’s post-conflict society, where most schools are segregated on religious grounds. Using life histories with sound postcards to investigate a music programme for social reconstruction in Colombia
This article outlines the development of an appropriate research approach, including methods from diverse disciplines, for researching the Colombian state-funded social music programme Music for Reconciliation (Música para la Reconciliación) . How doctoral students and graduates describe facilitating experiences and strategies for their thesis writing learning process: A Qualitative Approach
This study considered the sources of facilitating experiences and strategies for thesis writing from doctoral students and graduates (N = 30). The sample was balanced between science and social science knowledge areas, with equal numbers of English as Second Language (ESL) participants in both groups. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to explore issues around feedback, training, cohort experiences and personal strategies for writing. …
