Degradation of Traditional Silicate Glass and Protective Coatings Under Simulated Unsheltered Conditions
Outdoor glass is subject to degradation due to environmental factors, which alter its physical and chemical properties depending on the exposure conditions. Studying glass weathering and the effectiveness and durability of conservation treatments is necessary for developing optimal conservation strategies for glass heritage objects. Here, an accelerated aging protocol based on actual environmental data is successfully employed to replicate weathe…
Duralumin Alloys in World War II Heritage Aircraft: Correlations Between Manufacturing Parameters and Alloys’ Properties
Duralumin-type alloys have been employed for structural and non-structural parts of aircraft since the early 1920s up to now. In the European project “PROtection and Conservation of Heritage AirCRAFT” (PROCRAFT), up to 34 aircraft wrecks from World War II from different nations (United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy) were identified. On most of them, the collection of numerous fragments was possible, thus constituting a…
Metal Fragments of Roman Pipes from Pompeii: Investigations on Copper-Based Alloys, Corrosion Products, and Surface Treatments
This work reports the study of metal fragments from Roman pipes excavated from the archaeological site of Pompeii and currently preserved in the deposits of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN). The Roman pipe, called the tibia, is a reed wind musical instrument similar to the Greek aulos. It can be made of wood, bone, and/or metal. Materials consisting of metal Cu-based alloys were excavated from archaeological burial environments…
Evaluation of the effectiveness of coatings for the protection of outdoor terracotta artworks through artificial ageing tests
Outdoor terracotta weathering simulated under representative environmental conditions. • Four commercial protective coatings evaluated in term of effectiveness and durability. • Fluorinated coating does not limit water penetration in the terracotta substrate. • Silica nano-coating (followed by alkylpolysiloxane emulsion) suitable for terracotta. Historical-artistic heritage, when located outdoor, is heavily targeted by deterioration phenomena suc…
Safeguarding outdoor cultural heritage materials in an ever-changing troposphere: Challenges and new guidelines for artificial ageing test
An innovative multi-component fluoropolymer-based coating on outdoor patinated bronze for Cultural Heritage: Durability and reversibility
Ancient Metallurgy at Sumhuram (Sultanate of Oman): Technical Aspects of Raised Inscriptions on South Arabian Bronzes
This paper focuses on the identification of alloys and the manufacturing techniques used for inscribed bronze vessels from Sumhuram (modern Khor Rori, Sultanate of Oman). A group of 19 fragments (dating back to the first to second century ad), thought to belong to the same inscribed vessel, were investigated with the aim of identifying the manufacturing process. The fragments were analysed by scanning electron microscopy with both energy-dispersi…
Electron paramagnetic resonance of mosaic glasses from the Mediterranean area
Ancient mosaic glass tesserae sampled from archaeological sites located in the Mediterranean area have been analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma‐Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP‐OES). The aim of the research was to understand the role played by 3d transition metals in the optical properties of such samples. In order to better identify the specific effect of the main chromophorous element, modern samples have been prepared in the laboratory by…
