Statistical testing of the height distributions showed that the proportion of the population living below the 100 m contour, and thus in the lowlands (27.7 per cent), was significantly greater than expected at the regional scale, whilst the highe…

  • Colonel Leake and the Classical Topography of Asia Minor

    Open Access•J M Wagstaff, John Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1987•References: 3

Almost everyone interested in the classical topography of Asia Minor is acquainted with the name of Leake. To Ramsay (1890, 51) he was “the greatest of modern topographers”. But few will know more than that he was a scholar to be reckoned with when attempting to locate classical sites or reconstruct ancient topographies. This paper outlines his career and his work on Asia Minor. Colonel Leake (Plate II a ), as he was generally known during the la…

    Open Access•Marvin W Mikesell, J M Wagstaff et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1987•Cited by: 2

This book provides a background to the modern geography of the Middle East by tracing the evolution of humanized managed landscapes from the domestication of cereals through to the initiation of the great transformations of the region in the mid-nineteenth century. By examining the natural potential of the region in terms of climate, natural vegetation and physical conditions, and charting the emergence of basic long-lasting traditional economies…

  • A note on some nineteenth‐century population statistics for Lebanon

    J M Wagstaff, John Wagstaff•ARTICLE•British Society for Middle…•1986

The reliability of various estimates of Lebanon's population in the nineteenth century is assessed. The author develops the hypothesis put forward by K. H. Karpat that nineteenth- and early twentieth-century population statistics were manipulated for political purposes

  • Settlement Pattern Evolution and Catastrophe Theory: A Reply

    J M Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1979•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The most important question raised by Bakers comment on my paper is that of the application of catastrophe theory to historico-geographical problems (Baker 1979; Wagstaff 1977b). Reiterating remarks published elsewhere (Baker 1977) he wonders whether historical data are adequate to this type of modeling and questions the interpretative status in an historical enquiry of a mathematical description of an observed pattern. Baker thus appears to adop…

  • War and Settlement Desertion in the Morea, 1685-1830

    J M Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1978•Cited by: 2

The paper seeks to test the hypothesis advanced by Antoniadis-Bibicou that warfare simply exaggerated settle- ment desertion in Greece and that the fundamental causes were long-term, socio-economic processes. Two allegedly destructive wars (1684-87, 1821-27) are examined for their likely impact on settlements, and the spatial patterns of military activity are compared with those of destroyed settlements as reconstructed from sources of c. 1700 an…

  • A Possible Interpretation of Settlement Pattern Evolution in Terms of 'Catastrophe Theory

    J M Wagstaff•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1978•Cited by: 7•References: 1

A review of the data available for settlement pattern development in the mountainous Mani peninsula of southern Greece between 400ooo-300ooo0 B.C. and A.D. 1830 reveals the existence of two distinct spatio-temporal unfoldings separated by a major discontinuity. This is located in the period between about A.D. 550 and 1250. Possible explanations involving factors external to the system are considered and discounted. An alternative endogenous expla…
