  • The space-age hotel: Ruination and negative value in the former East Germany

    Open Access•Samantha Maurer Fox•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2025•References: 51

For years the decrepit Hotel Lunik in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany, a city founded in 1950 as a model of socialist urbanism, has been widely understood as "a trace of capitalism." Once a central landmark, Lunik was sold to a real estate speculator in 2006 and left to decay. In contrast, however, the hotel's surrounding residential buildings have been revitalized through municipal projects that draw on socialist-era ideals. Lunik thus embodies tensio…

  • A city of newcomers: Migration and solidarity in the former East Germany

    Open Access•Samantha Maurer Fox•ARTICLE•City & Society•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 40

This article examines how urban temporalities have come to alternately foster and hinder migrants' incorporation into the larger social body. It draws on ethnographic and archival research conducted in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany, and focuses on the so-called "migrant crisis" of 2015, which resonated with earlier migration histories in the region. When Eisenhüttenstadt was founded in 1950, nearly one-third of its residents were naturalized East Ger…

  • The Socialist Bratwurst: East German Urbanism and Its Reemergence in the Present

    Open Access•Samantha Maurer Fox•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban History•2022

This article examines defining features of East German urban planning—primarily the housing complex and the city/settlement binary—and their relationship to Eisenhüttenstadt, a city founded in 1950 as Stalinstadt, an East German socialist utopia. Today Eisenhüttenstadt is home to a novel form of urban renewal in which architects and planners look to the socialist past for inspiration as they imagine a new urban future. I examine the history of so…

  • I Feel Brandenburg: Temporality, Vacancy, and Migration in Germany's Model Socialist City

    Samantha Maurer Fox•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•2022

This paper examines the shifting notions of vacancy deployed in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany from its founding in 1950 as Stalinstadt, an East German socialist utopia, through to the 2015 European Migrant Crisis, when Eisenhüttenstadt found itself with over 1,000 uninhabited apartments and thousands of asylum seekers living in tents, shipping containers, and a high school gym. Eisenhüttenstadt is a steel manufacturing city on the German-Polish borde…

  • Street lighting and the uneasy coexistence of socialist and capitalist urban imaginaries

    Open Access•Samantha Maurer Fox•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 29

This essay examines the partial privatization of street lamps in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany. Founded in 1950 as Stalinstadt, East Germany's steel manufacturing hub and socialist utopia, today the city suffers from economic shrinkage and depopulation. In 2014, Eisenhüttenstadt's government privatized approximately 10% of the city's street lamps, a response to both the city's shrunken tax base and to the Energiewende, Germany's national push toward …
