Adult Involvement in the Exercise of Agency in Child Protection: Children's Desires and Perceptions
The agency of children in child protection services (CPS) facing rules and restrictions due to their protection status is not well known. Agency is defined as conscious and purposeful thoughts and actions by an agent that have an effect in social relationships and institutions. To our knowledge, the literature on children's agency in CPS gives considerable attention to children's relationships with social workers, while other relationships have b…
Post‐separation parental conflict and father–child physical contact: A bidirectional study
The first goal of this longitudinal study was to examine the strength and direction of the relations between post‐separation parental conflict (PSPC) and father–child physical contact, as reported by the mother, at the time of separation (Time 1) and in the following 2 years (Time 2). A cross‐lagged panel model was conducted with a sample of 198 parents of children from 3 to 8 years old at the time of separation. The results indicated that PSPC a…
Longitudinal Association Between the Quality of the Separated Parents' Relationship and the Frequency of Father-Child Contact: The Mothers' Perspective
This longitudinal study is based on family systems theory and aims to explore the association between the quality of the separated parents' relationship and the frequency of father-child contact up to five years after parental separation. Using data collected from 408 families from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD), multilevel analyses and latent growth curve model were carried out. The results highlight a positive associ…
Trajectories of Paternal Contact After Parental Separation: A Latent Class Growth Analysis
A latent class growth curve analysis was conducted to model post-separation, paternal involvement trajectories over an 8-year period from the time of separation. Our sample was composed of 245 separated mothers whose data was drawn from a representative survey of Québec children. Four classes of distinct trajectories were identified: shared-time, near-shared-time, moderate-stable, and low-decreasing. The majority of fathers maintained a consisten…
A multidimensional measure of father involvement following parental separation
Understanding Fathers’ Involvement Relative to the Other Parent After Parental Separation
Following parental separation, fathers' greater or lesser parental involvement relative to the other parent may be differently accounted for by father, child, and coparental factors. A representative sample of 671 separated fathers completed questionnaires two and four years after separation. For fathers less involved than the other parent, a better coparenting relationship accounts for greater T1 involvement, but predicts a decrease in involveme…
Parenting support: The added value of an enhanced program on child behavior
Efficacy of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program on 0–12 year-old Quebec children's behavior
Community Readiness for Child Maltreatment Prevention: The Challenge of a Brief Assessment
Parental engagement in child protection services: A multidimensional, longitudinal and interactive framework
Adjustment of children using supervised access services: Longitudinal outcomes, multiple perspectives, and correlates
Supervised access services (SAS) allow parents who represent a risk for their children or for the other parent to maintain contact with or exchange custody of their children in the presence of a third person. Even though these services have been designed in the children's best interest, few studies have, until now, documented the evolution in the parents' and children's adjustment or in the quality of the relationships between the family members …

The relationship between foster care families and birth families in a child welfare context: The determining factors
Children placed in foster care families usually continue to see their birth parents in supervised and home visits. These children deal with the fact that they belonged to two families in a context where the relationship between the two families is sometimes complex and tense. Based on 45 semi‐structured interviews conducted with foster care families and kinship foster care families, the present study examines the relationship between foster care …
Child Adjustment in Joint Physical Custody Versus Sole Custody: A Meta-Analytic Review
A meta-analysis was conducted to compare the adjustment of children in joint and sole custody. The studies included here defined joint custody as a proportion of time spent by children in each home ranging from a one-third time division (70%/30%) to an equal share (50%/50%). The overall results of the 19 selected studies revealed better outcomes for children in joint custody, with a weak effect size (d = .109). Moreover, this association was mode…
Stepfamily Break-Up: A Qualitative Analysis of Trajectories and Processes
Stepfamilies are considered to be less stable than first unions. There has been little research conducted that explains why stepfamilies break up or what the viewpoint of the parents and stepparents is. This qualitative study, which was based on life course theory, analyzed the statements made during an interview of 26 parents and stepparents who separated in the first 5 years of their relationship. The results showed that the underlying elements…
The Role of Media in Reporting Child Abuse
This study looks at the short-term impact that the media coverage of children in need of protection had on the number of cases reported to child protection agencies. The number of reports (N = 11,646) made to these agencies in Canada was tallied each week during a 24-month period. During the same period, a content analysis of print media was conducted regarding child maltreatment and/or child protection services (CPS) to identify and count the nu…

Post-Separation Conflict Trajectories: A Longitudinal Study
Although previous studies have shown that parental separation and parental conflict contribute independently to the adaptation difficulties of young people, there is, as of yet, no precise portrait of how post-separation conflicts evolve. Indeed, some fundamental questions remain unanswered: (1) Do parents who experience few conflicts during their break-up continue to enjoy a harmonious relationship afterward? (2) When parents have a conflictual …
