  • From prosthetic memory to prosthetic denial

Open Access•Roberto Ulloa, Eve Monique Zucker et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2026

The proliferation of large language models (LLMs) can influence how historical narratives are disseminated and perceived. This study explores the implications of LLMs’ responses on the representation of mass atrocity memory, examining whether generative AI systems contribute to prosthetic memory, i.e., mediated experiences of historical events, or to what we term “prosthetic denial,” the AI-mediated erasure or distortion of atrocity memories. • Trauma and Its Aftermath

    Open Access•Eve Monique Zucker•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 6

I wish for you two boys and two girls," the elderly man pronounced. He was addressing both myself and my fiancé as he reached out to shake our hands as we were leaving his traditional wooden house. He had told us earlier that he spends his days in this late chapter of his life enjoying his grandchildren and tending his vegetable plot. Now at the door ready to leave I hesitated, not wanting to extend my hand, but then I did so anyway. This grandfa…

  • Matters of Morality

    Open Access•Eve Monique Zucker•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2009

In a Khmer village located in Cambodia's southwest, an elderly man is blamed for the executions of his neighbors and extended kin. He is said to have killed these people when he worked as the village chief under the Khmer Rouge in the early 1970s. Using interviews and conversations with this man and others in his community, as well as observations and archival research, I speculatively examine villagers' accounts of the morality of his actions as…

  • Transcending Time and Terror

Open Access•Eve Monique Zucker•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2006•Cited by: 2

This article is concerned with social and moral cohesion in the wake of war and violence. In the Cambodian village of O'Thmaa, villagers are making tentative and at times ambiguous efforts to connect to their pre-Khmer Rouge past to recreate a sense of community and moral order. This article examines this process through a detailed ethnographic description and analysis of the production of O'Thmaa's harvest ritual and festival, Bon Dalien
